The Social Media Dilemma

Watch out on Linkedin, Upwork, Facebook - all crawling with scams. Not just job market either. My mum got done over by someone on FB pretending to be Renfe offering discount rail deals for elderly.

As If - Headline to appeal to the (material) 70+ voters

Its not very free market is it?

I sort of long for the days when politics was about economics & not ‘culture wars’

A headline grabbing gimmick that will never happen

Completely unenforceable too

General election in the UK likely before the end of 2024, and the US Presidential Election in the autumn, they’re going to be the dirtiest, nastiest campaigns in history. If you think social media is a sewer now, then think again. It’s going to go to whole new levels of lies, mistruths, smears and fakes. I really fear that the democratic process in both countries won’t be able to survive it.

I strongly suspect and fear you’ll be proven correct

Biden will lose if he runs, doubt he puts himself through it all and who could blame him.

I’ve never used Linkedin - is there any practical use for it if you’re not looking for work? I just started a new role in sposorship and digital marketing. Is it somewhere I could find potential clients who want to spend money promoting music/theater events?

To me it’s just boast post/weird flex/motivational quote hell, but YMMV.

Having said that I have got probably 3 out of my last 5 roles through LinkedIn, but I never use beyond that.

(possibly depends what industry you’re in as to what kind of overall experience you get)

I think you definitely could. You don’t have to be salesy, it’s just about networking and getting on people’s radar. Try and offer value (say something at least interesting) is my approach.

Yes. It is definitely a broader social media business tool than just looking for jobs. There are successful businesses which use it as their primary (possibly sole) channel. You need to build up your followers through regular posts of engaging content and ensure you’ve got a consistent voice. It’s not a space for a hard sell approach.

thanks for all the responses - I don’t know if I have the energy to build another online profile with engaging content but I can see why that would be necessary.

For better or for worse they make it VERY easy to create a profile - just input your work experience/projects, make a snappy title, and you’re set. I only update when I change roles.

I started a new job in September. My 1st ever job at 51. Always been self employed (small property developments) and now I work for my local council’s Architectural in house practice and I thought it would be helpful to join LinkedIn. I’m absolutely baffled by it. It seems worse than instagram or even TikTok for the levels of nonsense :joy:

Aside from that I’ve taken a month off socials. It’s been nice!! LinkedIn is about to get binned. It’s awful.

We do not have to live in the world the new technocrats are designing for us. We do not have to acquiesce to their growing project of dehumanization and data mining. Each of us has agency.

No more “build it because we can.” No more algorithmic feedbags. No more infrastructure designed to make the people less powerful and the powerful more controlling. Every day we vote with our attention; it is precious, and desperately wanted by those who will use it against us for their own profit and political goals. Don’t let them.

Perhaps we should all start a TP LinkedIn Support Group in there…

I use it a fair bit to source leads for new business generation and associated pportunities via a plug in that provides mobiles.and emails for around 70% of people on there.
Can be a useful tool if used correctly. But yeah, the motivational posts and personal life stories can get to fuck.

Same. Necessary evil in my line of work.
