Thanks Joe and everyone else. It’s been a lot of fun so far, interviewing people all over the place. If any of you want to chat about any forthcoming projects give me a shout.

I feel like I owe Musk a congratulatory pat on the back for so ruining the platform that deleting my personal account a year ago and vowing never to return has been way easier than it ever was before, when the longest I managed was about three months. I have a work account I have to check a couple of times a day, but I’m essentially clean of the damn site now. Thanks Elon!

A thousand times this. I deleted my account around the same time but still lurked for breaking news. Now I no longer do and my mental health has improved considerably. We owe him a debt of gratitude.

Delete them all. A monumental waste of precious time.

Ha ! Yes I did as well
Like you say… a mental health improvement

I’ve reached a point now where I think Twitter/X not only needs to be dropped but actually needs to be closed down by the US government. Not an easy conclusion because there are millions of good people, dissidents, isolated communities, niche interests, altruistic people, who rely on it for whatever reason but those freedoms are outweighed by the serious danger to world peace posed by reckless idiots sharing propaganda/lies either lazily or cynically. The reaction to the hospital explosion was amplified by people making accusations w/o any supporting evidence. The worst ‘Confirmation Bias’ you could imagine. And emotions will be inflamed and embassies will get burnt down, and even more people will die if this carries on.

I’ve been using for twitter regularly for about 13 years but deleted it off my phone last week (kept my account for now so I can check on laptop if someone messages me or whatever).
Its been getting progressively worse since that massive cunt Elon took over but what I really don’t need is to have tweets from the Israeli government appearing unsolicited in my feed. That, the aforementioned propaganda and misinformation and general bleakness of the whole thing is not what I’m looking for when I’ve got 5 minutes to kill at work.

shame because it used to be good but its a fucking mess now.

You can easily mute/block accounts and set your timeline to following. Not an issue for me. That won’t however prevent the retweets of other players by people you ordinarily like to read and who are sometimes gullible or susceptible to emotion over objective analysis (which is where the platform totally collapses). I’m very cautious about engaging with anything that isn’t verified. The BBC did themselves a massive disservice yesterday by not following basic journalist corroboration. Who will believe them next time? If you can’t believe BBC Foreign Affairs then WHO do you believe? That is where it gets scary.

Personally I don’t have a problem with seeing official state channels because you would expect them to be biased. My issue is with independent sources I’ve never heard of and who might be serious or might be some kid in his bedroom. There’s a real issue determining who is maliciously sharing crap and who is just following the herd. It is really difficult and very dangerous, and what drove my earlier post.

Thing is i generally avoid any political content for the most part. I really only want music and non-depressing content where possible.
Muting accounts is all well and good but when you have to do that everyday it just becomes pointless using the site.
The other main bugbear i have is that since the change in format when they split the TL into “follow” and “for you” i dont see updates from majority of accounts i follow unless i go to “for you” which means seeing all sorts of other shite i dont care about.

So im out for now thanks!

Absolutely fascinating report: From Digital Natives to Digital Captives.

Well worth the read. An insight into Gen Z and their relationship with social media.

Twitter or “X” has become a sewer since Musk took it over, and removing it from my life would only be a good thing. Problem is, as an avid follower of non league football, it is about the only place where I can keep.up with scores and club news etc, etc. Many clubs and effectively use it as their only media presence.
Big dilemna, delete the app and would instantly lose touch with what is going on.

I will forever cling to my iPhone 13 mini, or at least for as long as they let me, but it didn’t end up changing my phone consumption habits at all, which was one of the reasons I bought it. I just like that it’s small.

I’ve neglected to ever post anything in this thread, simply because I have nothing positive to say, nor do I have anything to add that others haven’t said.

But I will say, for me, this year in particular; it’s sort of been the straw that broke the camel’s back. I actively feel worse almost every time I engage in social media. I don’t enjoy any of them. For “business” as a musician, nor pleasure as a human being. I get nothing out of it. Those that have followed me on Instagram or Facebook, you’ve probably noticed the tone I take when I get on to market and promote myself, as I’m obligated to do in this modern era. I don’t enjoy it.

I say this, not out of pretension but out of sincerity, I make music for the art of it. I don’t make music to do business, to (try and) make a million dollars, to be a marketer. It echoes what Joe just posted. I don’t make “content”, in fact, I fucking hate that term that creators and influencers have adopted. Pardon my language. I enjoy making music and I enjoy making cover art, I enjoy the process, and it could be argued that I’m compelled to do it. Everything else is noise, literally and figuratively.

On one hand, I owe what I’ve accomplished to social media in some ways. I have and have had exclusively a digital presence. On the other hand, I haven’t enjoyed the online world for years, and I actively dislike the “obligation” I have to it. I dislike the obligation all artists of any kind have to it. In this position that I’ve described, there is no amount of “filtering”, “catering”, muting, blocking, etc., that will improve this. I’ve hit a point where I’m of the mindset that almost no good has come from this over-connectedness. Which is false, good has come from it, but does it outweigh the bad? I don’t think so. I’m somewhat convinced that humanity was never “meant” to be this connected and in a broad sense, I think we’d be better off without it. For all the world’s problems, at least this wouldn’t be one. It’s an unfortunate stance to have and I don’t like having it, I just don’t think anything could happen to convince me otherwise at this point.

So the answer is just to unplug as much as I can. I don’t have to be privy to it all. I don’t care to be. I’ll begrudgingly post when I have music to share, because that’s the way of the world now, and I won’t like it. Hopefully something changes. Will it? Probably not.

Thanks for reading that vent session.
