Watch it you fools
BlackBerry is a fun one one Netflix. Classic rise & fall of a good idea where they overstretch themselves and miss out on the next big thing…
Went to see this today - absolutely loved it (Bill Pullman in particular was ace). Hard to be objective though because as I slide into old age I find myself listening to Bill Evans records more than anything else.
I hit 55 this summer and immediately retired from my job at Faceless Megacorp. Have spent a lot of hours decompressing from the tyranny of Microsoft Teams by staring vacantly out of the window while listening to ‘Sunday at the Village Vanguard’. An utter joy.
I watched it tonight and, like you, loved it. I love his music too but, paradoxically, it’s mostly missing in the film. It’s so beautifully shot and so much goes unsaid. His parents, particularly Bill Pullman as his dad, just raise the film up another notch.
The scene where Bill and his parents listen to his new album at their place in Florida is mesmerising. Really difficult to pull off a scene like that where nothing really happens except for the record turning on the deck but the emotion in their faces is something else.
I also listened to Village Vanguard on the walk home after the film had finished. Such a wonderful album.
Happy October! Each year I try to watch one horror movie a day. Last night I watched Silent House (2011) with Elizabeth Olsen who was stunning in her performance. It’s a pretend single-shot film, but it really works to build tension and suspense along with the shadowy home interior. I’m reading it was shot in 15-minute bursts, which is still incredibly impressive. It’s a remake of the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda and supposedly based on a true story. I’m not really sure what other movies I’d compare it to; a combination of haunted house and deteriorating psychology themes. 8/10
Trigger warning for child abuse.
I spent 2017 listening to pretty much nothing other than Bill Evans and every minute was time well spent. Looking forward to seeing the film.
Resident Evil. A good first half let down by an increasingly tedious second.
2.5 tendrils out of 5. More tendrils would probably be awarded if I were a player of the games.
About to watch the 40th Anniversary 4K screening of this at DCA here in Dundee. 5 min walk from work, grab a beer to take in, lovely stuff. Some film it is too ![]()
Digger
A massive wild swing that lands somewhere between a cautionary global warming fable and an Eco farce. Its on track to be the biggest Hollywood flop of all time, which is a bit unfair because its actually quite decent and visually stunning to look at. Tom Cruise is brilliant, Riz Ahmed is even better. Its supremely meta and worth it for seeing what Cruise looks like in an art house production
I was out with both seeing the trailer and also Tom Cruise so 100% a miss for me.
Trailer/cast looks awesome. I haven’t been to a movie theater in years, but still it’s surprising this is going to be considered a flop. Maybe ticket sales should no longer be a reflection of a film’s success?
Resurrection (2025, China)
I had no idea what I was getting into when I put this on last night. I’m only halfway through (it’s 2.5 hours), but this is one of the most unique movies I’ve ever seen. If you want to skip the trailer and go in blind like I did, imagine Michel Gondry did the practical effects for the movie The Fall, but the plot was a celebration of cinema history, human’s desire to dream, and the lengths we go to to avoid facing our trauma.
I’ve seen theories that its just a vehicle to launch the Warner Brothers / Paramount merger and TC’s exclusivity of working for that studio but I’m not sure about that, I’d be surprised if the Director would tangle with something so cynical but who knows how Hollywood really works
I dont think the trailers connected with the general mainstream cinema going audience, and seeing the poster boy of Top Gun. Mission Impossible etc larking about in a fat suit and prosthetics has been a real turn off
Cruise should really be out there engaging with the audience and discussing the films themes instead of doing zero press so feels like its all contributed to it bombing spectacularly
From what I’ve heard about the film it sounds like classic case of ‘non-posterable’ story - people won’t see it if they don’t get what it’s about. A bit like Fight Club (although look where that ended up)
Thank you for reminding me about this one, I’ve started it a few months ago, but felt I’m not gonna be well focused till the end and gave up.
Long Day’s Journey Into Night is amazing from the same director.
Yes it seems like his three films have all been very ambitious. Pretty cool to have that kind of production money to make your weird ideas come to life like that. Maybe there’s Chinese government backing?
Resurrection makes little sense to me so far, but I appreciate it as a dream logic narrative. He achieves representing the way dreams make enough sense that we don’t question events, but not enough sense that when we awake and think back we’re like “what the hell was that about.”
Speaking of Tom Cruise I watched eyes wide shut again yesterday. My favourite Kubrick flick I think. Outrageous cinema
I loved it. Saw it in IMAX. Thought cruise was brilliant, great premise, amazing set design. I must have really bad taste in films with the trashing it seems to be getting ![]()
I heard it described as “the best shit film I’ve ever seen” by a mate who watched it. Must have some redeeming features.
