Make sure you watch O Som Ao Redor (Neighboring Sounds) which is his best IMO.
Also Retratos Fantasmas

Welp, I know what we’re watching tonight. Thank you kindly!
Agreed - it is really special. We went for a showing Christmas day in a packed cinema. Aquarius was our other favourite by him (among other delights there is a great dance scene in the apartment set to this balearic classic )
I totally forgot that he directed that.
Went to see a 4k restoration of Aria. Very arthouse 80s. Very good in places. It was different directors making shorts around different Arias. Jean-Luc Goddard, Robert Altman, Ken Russell etc. Also has John Hurt as a pierott.
Dutch maybe?
No Other Choice is a brilliant one from Park Chan-wook… really enjoyed this one, terrific black humour…
Film of the year
The Secret Agent
Not quite sure what to make of it yet. Without doubt the production is outstanding, the period detail and atmosphere of late 70’s Brazil is amazing. I found the plot to be confusing and slightly impenetrable. There’s a lot going on under the surface that I’m not sure translated enough to me. Needs to be watched a couple of times.
A family outing to the imax in London for Interstellar.
3 of the 4 of us were first time fliers.
Felt like being in space for 3 hours. Stunning.
Took me about three watches to understand wtf was going on! ![]()
Took the boy to see Hoppers. Its a lot of fun, one of the better recent Pixar’s. Its basically Avatar for kids
Also watched the new Peaker Blinders. Its decent, though felt it was not entirely necessary. I think Steven Knight just wanted to see Tommy in the 1940’s.
Saw Hoppers last week with my 7yo, fantastic, best ‘kids’ film i’ve seen since The Wild Robot.
Project Hail Mary. I wish someone had forced me into a spoiler premature coma so I’d have spoiler woken up without any memory of why I went to see this total garbage ![]()
The Love That Remains (2025)
I was waiting this one for a long time.
Beautiful viignettes of the family in fracture in Icelandic landscape. Funny and emotional.
Palmason continues to deliver good movies.
The Last One For The Road/Le citta di pianura (2025)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt36491632/
A cute road trip of two old men from the north of Italy and a young geek from the south with a lot of alcohol. The downfall of a region/country/world, full of contrasts and hilarious moments, love and friendship. A small film about big things - It’s not about destination, it’s about journey.
Great casting
posting in case of interest
they’re showing the rave film at my local cinema but I don’t think I can be bothered
would love to see the Arthur Baker one but it’s Brooklyn only
I went to see an AI doc at the cinema last night that Focus are distributing. Both scary and comforting at the same time… In fact maybe more scary but an interesting watch.
I read the book and I loved it, without revealing any spoilers, why didn’t you like it? Might go and see this weekend ![]()
Just felt it was pitched real dumb or at kids level. It felt like every space film you’ve seen in the past 20 years.
I know ‘suspend disbelief’ and everything but it was wholly unsatisfactory for me. Surely there’s room for an entertaining space film that doesn’t treat its audience like total idiots? ![]()
P.S. I didn’t like The Martian so I’m not even sure why we went to see it. I was swayed by a Kermode review where there was a lot of reference to Silent Running. Erm, just no…
Thank you, just checked some reviews on IMDB and almost everyone who’s read the book confirms it to be a bad adaptation, so I’ll be patient and wait until it seeds my way in any kind of form ![]()
