Crime 101
Didn’t know much about this one beforehand but was pleasantly surprised. Solid cast (Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Koeghan etc) and had a bit more about it than your average crime thriller.

Much as I loved Marty Supreme (and, to a slightly lesser extent, One Battle After Another), the best 2025 film I’ve seen is The Secret Agent. Wagner Maura is, as ever, fantastic, but I walked out of there thinking I need to see every scrap of film Kleber Mendonça Filho has ever shot. It’s something else

Agreed - it is really special. We went for a showing Christmas day in a packed cinema. Aquarius was our other favourite by him (among other delights there is a great dance scene in the apartment set to this balearic classic )

Went to see a 4k restoration of Aria. Very arthouse 80s. Very good in places. It was different directors making shorts around different Arias. Jean-Luc Goddard, Robert Altman, Ken Russell etc. Also has John Hurt as a pierott.

The Secret Agent
Not quite sure what to make of it yet. Without doubt the production is outstanding, the period detail and atmosphere of late 70’s Brazil is amazing. I found the plot to be confusing and slightly impenetrable. There’s a lot going on under the surface that I’m not sure translated enough to me. Needs to be watched a couple of times.

Took the boy to see Hoppers. Its a lot of fun, one of the better recent Pixar’s. Its basically Avatar for kids
Also watched the new Peaker Blinders. Its decent, though felt it was not entirely necessary. I think Steven Knight just wanted to see Tommy in the 1940’s.
