Added to the rewatch list.
Looking forward to watching some of these, never heard of The Ice Queen, although being the Guardian they could all be shite.
It’s revealing that there’s quite a lot of documentaries in there. I think it’s been a really forgettable year for drama films. My top ones are Weapons, I Swear, Bring Her Back, Sinners, Companion, I’m Still Here. Not sure I could even manage a top ten.
I’ll start with those. Some of the Docs look heavy going but necessary viewings.
The Holdovers today at the cinema. Third time watching, so good, clocked even more detail and nuance this time around.
A bit like PTA for us, a new one from Kleber Mendonça Filho is always a must-see. Packed house on Christmas day. A real feast of a movie, great set pieces and characters. A body part that takes on a Gogolian life of its own. Wagner Moura is incredible but all of the characters have something going on. Class, race, corruption. Funny, surreal, infuriating. It’s long and beats to its own time, but we were mesmerised.
That Swedish family drama I’ve forgotten the name of came out on top with one battle after another being the most fun had in the cinema plus that one with the guy playing the twins against the zombies. I’m terrible with film names.
Yesterday I watched Druk (one more round). I think it’s 2020.
So good, beautiful in its own way. Mads is top of his game and that ending scene is kinda hypnotising. Recommended!
We were just talking about that yesterday
Also the Meters + high-end stereo porn
Going in on Marty Supreme tonight. Expectations are high.
What did you think? I found it exhilarating and exhausting. The real people casting is amazing and the 80s music added to the febrile and confusing atmosphere in a positive way. I needed a comedown after it.
Not sure what to make of it, tbh. I enjoyed it as a film, but it was very intense, and whilst I thought TC did a good job and is a great actor, I didn’t really connect with his character, and therefore, didn’t really care about the outcome. Maybe it was the lack of backstory/character development the overall gonzo style, or my expectations were just too high, but it left me feeling a bit shortchanged.
7 Wiff Waffs out of 10
Watched Bugonia tonight - thoroughly enjoyed it, but it’s very much a commercially accessible Yorgos Lanthimos film for better or worse.
A bumper crop of great films over the holiday:
Marty Supreme is so worth a watch on the big screen–Chalamet is wonderful, pure chutzpah, a real piece of shit. Really loved the cameos from non-actors as well (Pico Iyer, Tyler the Creator, et al), Gwyneth Paltrow is on point. The film comes across as more of a Hollywoodized Uncut Gems with a different sort of ending. Totally worth your time.
Left-Handed Girl from Shih-Ching Tsou. Tsou is a frequent collaborator with Sean Baker (co-director, writer, producer) and if you like his stuff this will be right up your alley–he co-wrote the script. Shot on an iPhone , like Tangerine.
Went to see this fever dream of a movie, stunningly beautiful, great soundtrack as well
Left handed girl was great!
Thanks for the recommendation
Watched Long Day’s Journey Into Night a few evenings ago and was floored. Excited to see the new one!
Saw Marty Supreme a couple of nights ago. Enjoyed it, but not sure about it being movie of the year. Certainly a full on visual rush to watch, but me and the good lady wife both thought it could have benefited from being 30 minutes shorter (but then, I think that about most films).
Literally every film these days. And everyone says it too. At what point do the film-makers start to listen?
watched knives out - wake up dead man. Pretty enjoyable to be honest
