The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

I guess yeah? It was pitched as adjacent to Civil War in some reviews though…

I didn’t see those reviews but maybe that comparison was wishful thinking?

I guess we are all looking for movies that stick it to the man, tell some home truths and give us hope. I’m not sure there is any! :joy:
I hoped for the same here but then settled for it being very entertaining.

One mate of mine said it was brilliant how Dicaprio turned into the Dude, his daughter into Lara Croft and Sean Penn into the Terminator.

Used my free SKY Cinema pass to go see Predator: Badlands. Big mistake. Overblown CGI fest thats predictable from the first minute. Attempts at jokes fall totally flat. Felt like they were torn between making it a PG or keeping it for adults. Connecting it to the Alien-verse unfortunately doesnt make it as interesting as it should. Disappointing as the previous installment Prey was brilliant.

Really enjoyed Prey, so had hopes for this one.

Prey was great but trailer for badlands looked awful

Apropos to the general theme - I had a mortifying memory flashback thanks to a reel I saw on Instagram this week that focused on bleak as fuck films. When I was in my mid 20’s I took a girl on our first date to see the film Nil By Mouth. To say she was not in the mood for romance after that harrowing experience is an understatement.

Watched Nuremberg at the weekend. Not without its faults in the first half (it has to gloss over a lot of detail/context I think) and I’m not a Rami Malek fan, but overall a decent movie. The real story here is Russell Crowe though. He will surely get nominated for plenty of awards.

Saw The Running Man yesterday and it was enjoyable enough for the most part, closer to the book than the Arnie version and a nice touch to have his head on the currency. Ending was absolutely abysmal though, as in truly terrible.

We went to see Sentimental Value last night. It was so great! Great soundtrack too.
