The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

Sorry (not sorry) but I’m actually looking forward to this. It will likely be a big ole turd like most sequels are:

Not very highbrow I know.

At least you get to look at Anne Hathaway for a couple of hours

Obligatory “they should of stopped at Toy Story 3” comment :joy:

That just reminded me of this classic LOL (TS3 spoilers  )

The thing that gets me is they could have given it a better title. I hate it when they just put a 2 at the end of it and call it a day…

The Devil wears Loewe, but had to change back to Prada because he couldn’t pronounce it.

Gone Girl. Really enjoyed it. Fincher’s formula for these blockbuster thrillers is to be admired. 2.5h of pure engagement. Rosamund Pike was brilliant throughout, basically plays at least 3 different versions of Amy.

Thanks for the tip on The Kingdom @Piers , watched on Friday and loved it. Brilliant performances by the Dad and his daughter, amazing if neither of them were actors.

Late to party but finally watched OBAA at the pictures. Superb acting/cinematography, but how political was it? Can’t help wondering if punches were pulled… (in current climate of fear).

It was all a bit silly for me. Seemed a confused film and story, almost a caper. Radical Leftist Nuns growing weed to support the cause. Erm. Ok?

The ending with his Daughter going out on her own protest missions, as if the whole thing wouldn’t have been over by then, but of course when the lead investigator of a Police/Military/Federal task force dies, the investigation dies with him! Was the ending supposed to tell us that they all lived happily ever after united against The Man, that protest never dies? Perhaps a comment on the lurch to Authoritarian Right Wing administrations the World over

Compare and contrast with something like Sicario, didn’t insult the audience’ intelligence and wasn’t afraid to ‘bleak’ it up…

Sean Penn’s character was essentially Freddie Kruger/the unstoppable, almost supernatural Bogey Man. A lame trope IMO. He gets knocked down but he gets up again, and carries on driven by pure evil hate. You’re telling me that he wouldn’t have just shot her dead himself, yet he handed her over to a bounty hunter accomplice? (an easily offended one at that!)

I know I know, suspend your disbelief and enjoy. Which I did to an extent, but it could have been so much better…

And Mrs J_C had a LOT to say about PTA’s Female characterisation!

Worth it in the cinema for the car scene though.

All valid complaints/plot holes for sure. But can be answered with–“it’s Pynchon”

It was a comedy more than anything else though right?
