The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

The juke joint scene when Sammie plays guitar. Worth the entrance fee alone. Amazing on a big screen.

Aye that was good, I think I could just have done without the whole spoiler From Dusk Till Dawn switcheroo

Absolutely

Screening of one of my all-time faves “Metropolitan” and director Whit Stillman was on hand. Really lovely guy as you would expect.

Did not know we had a “spoiler” button… how did you do that?

In a reply go to the settings cog. There are two flavours. Blur Spoiler or Hide Details

Watched Conclave over the weekend and thought it was great, much better than I’d expected it to be. Good characters, great acting and beautifully shot, they create the suspense really well.

Went to see Friendship. Quite the ride. Recommended if the Tim Robinson shows are your thing.

The new Mission Impossible is a bit underwhelming. I wrote a review if you’d like to read it

Watched Fincher’s “The Game” for the first time and really enjoyed it. Black Mirror fans would too I reckon. The cinematography is immaculate as always with Fincher. Sean Penn isn’t on screen much but definitely goes all in when he is. Capital A acting. Micheal Douglas is at his best.

Fun fact: the cinematographer (Harris Savides) who worked on The Game also worked on Madonna’s iconic Bedtime Stories video. Incidentally Fincher didn’t, though he obviously did loads of music videos during those years.

I’m a sucker for that mid-late 90’s / early 00’s aesthetic (Traffic, Memento etc) - any recommendations, especially outside the big Hollywood productions?

I remember really liking The Game when it came out. Might have to re-watch.

I re-watched Escape from New York on Mubi the other night. I’ve seen it so many times over the years but it still stands up. The lens flare all over the film is so good!

Have you seen Dark City? Such an underrated film!

The City of Lost Children is pretty neat, in a similar vein (but wackier)

Escape from New York is probably my most rewatched film of all time. I’d be surprised if I’ve not seen it 100 times since 1985, it was my favourite film as a teenager.

I introduced my gf to Escape from New York and Snake Plissken a couple of weeks ago. One of the many films I first watched at my Gran’s as a wee boy. Great film and soundtrack.

Me too. I taped the sound of the TV when we rented the VHS onto audio cassette and I used to listen to it all the time! :joy:

Anyone seen Sinners yet?

Yes. It’s good until it’s not IMO. Why do so many films fall apart in the third act? All kinds of narrative nonsense to try and tie things up :joy:

Overall I gave it 6/10
