It looks good - pitched somewhere between the styles of Alien and Aliens - but having watched the trailer, I feel like I’ve pretty much seen the film now. It gives way too much away.
Totally agree, the new trailer showed way too much.
Some things we will avoid but then finally surrender to and watch as they are a “cultural touchstone” lol - this was one. Finally got around to it last week when my wife unceremoniously announced we were going to give it a go as it was being referenced everywhere. Something was a bit off–the settings & time period markers were present & correct if not quite believable. It felt as if Brideshead, Ripley, and–not least–Kind Hearts & Coronets were fed into ChatGPT with a request for mid-00s setting & markers. It hung in there for around two thirds of the running time, but completely jumped the shark with the graveside business. Some nice bits of performance (and a terrific final scene) but otherwise utter trash through and through. Too bad, as we loved her Promising Young Woman.
Went to see Deadpool and Wolverine last night. Even though I didn’t quite get all the in jokes relating to X-men it was really enjoyable lots of really funny stuff and totally taking the piss out of Marvel and superhero films in general. If you don’t like Ryan Reynolds then you’ll struggle obviously but I thought it was great fun. I heard that Madonna was sneaked in to the NY premiere after lights out and wondered why. Turns out there’s good use of one of her better tunes during the finale.
Alien Romulus. Starts okayish, I suppose, but the things wrong with it rapidly start to pile up. I actually left the cinema quite angry.
To compare it to another franchise, it’s what Ghostbusters Afterlife is to Ghostbusters. Stay home and watch the original.
The age of the neverending reboot is getting so dull. Is it too much to ask Hollywood to come up with some fresh ideas?
I learned my lesson with Prometheus
Saved me a trip on Wednesday
Yeah the franchise has been well and truly rinsed. Still managed to enjoy it though. Nice to see less CGI and more practical effects.
I enjoyed the new Alien too. Lots of call backs to the early films and it goes out of its way to look and feel like those, which is no bad thing. It does suffers from sequel / prequel-ism though, there is some awful CGI on a cameo character and it totally fumbles a famous line. Some original ideas stylistically, it just about justifies its existence
That “joke” was unforgivable IMO
Just got back from watching Starve Acre at the local cinema. Really great folk horror which perfectly captures the classic 70’s feel of the genre.
The soundtrack/score/sound design is brilliantly done by Matthew Herbert which adds a lot to the film.
There was a q&a with the director Daniel Kokotajlo afterwards which was interesting and he seems like a lovely man.
Will keep an eye for this, sounds good.
Really excited for Guadagnino’s new one Queer starring Daniel Craig.
Mega excited for Anora too. Loved Sean Baker’s previous films and this looks great. Mikey Madison already a predicted shoe-in for Best Actress at the Oscars.
National theatre live again tonight for Prima Facie and oh my god was Jodie Comer good or what. For the first half hour it felt a bit one paced and I didn’t have high hopes but from there it was an absolute tour de force. How do you do that alone on stage for two hours? I will never know.
Strange Darling. Not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but all shot in 35mm and looks stunning. Best viewed with as little information as possible so avoid reading reviews.
Saw ‘The Substance’ last night. With Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
A body horror romp pulling in bits from The Shining, The Fly, The Thing, Carrie, and many more.
The third act is just bonkers and extremely bloody.
Really great fun!
Went to see Lee yesterday on my day off. Really really enjoyed it. I’d been to a Lee Miller exhibition last year and had visited Farley Farm House a few years ago and met her and Roland Penrose’s son and bought a print of hers (still haven’t hung it to my shame).
5/5

Megalopolis, was looking forward to it, Kermode seems undecided
