Mega excited for Anora too. Loved Sean Baker’s previous films and this looks great. Mikey Madison already a predicted shoe-in for Best Actress at the Oscars.

National theatre live again tonight for Prima Facie and oh my god was Jodie Comer good or what. For the first half hour it felt a bit one paced and I didn’t have high hopes but from there it was an absolute tour de force. How do you do that alone on stage for two hours? I will never know.

Strange Darling. Not nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but all shot in 35mm and looks stunning. Best viewed with as little information as possible so avoid reading reviews.

Saw ‘The Substance’ last night. With Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
A body horror romp pulling in bits from The Shining, The Fly, The Thing, Carrie, and many more.
The third act is just bonkers and extremely bloody.
Really great fun!

Went to see Lee yesterday on my day off. Really really enjoyed it. I’d been to a Lee Miller exhibition last year and had visited Farley Farm House a few years ago and met her and Roland Penrose’s son and bought a print of hers (still haven’t hung it to my shame).

I went to college with a lot of people like Kermode… thankfully most of them grew up and grew out of it…

Caught The Shining on a matinee at the cinerama here in town. Always new things to notice in a Kubrick film. This go around the music in particular felt deafening & thrilling at once. Also the way the film uses time, with the intervals decreasing rapidly as the madness winds up.

Despite everything, I’m still going to “Megaflopolis” at the cinema. I’m morbidly fascinated to see how explosively Coppola has shat on his legacy.

It’s really bloody in the final act, but I really enjoyed it. It certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste. It’s unsettling and audacious, and all the better for it imo.
Lots of nods to past horrors (Shining, Carrie, The Fly etc).
Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are fantastic.

We saw it at HOME in Manchester and we had one or two walkers. The majority stuck around for the ride though.
There are some comedic elements and proper laugh out loud bits too, as well as the jaw dropping wtf moments.

Caught the Substance this evening and I was surprised how admirably gross it is.
I’m hard pressed to say if it’s good or bad. It gets a reaction but it’s not an emotional or intellectual one, more physical. No one wanted dinner after.
A few very funny bits, Demi Moore is a great bit of casting but everything is so heavy handed (intentionally) that the end result for me was just… yuck.

Saw Strange Darling last week, and I cant decide if I enjoyed it or it was something I endured. I’m still thinking about it which I guess is some kind of recommendation. There was a moment when I almost walked out until the twist revealed itself. It goes out of its way to tell you it was shot on 35mm and it does have that 70s grimy look and feel. Best to go in blind and dont read anything about it.
