The Ibiza Thread

Following a one-off night, Harvey’s not doing his Sept run this year which is a real bummer. Doc’s orders it seems. We will be there for 4/5 days anyway from the 20th if anyone’s about?

You’ve just reminded me that on Saturday night me and my friend met a guy who genuinely thought we were Rocky & Diesel.

As a side note, Toby Jones just seems like a wonderful human being.

The Padilla tribute last week looked like fun. Would love to have heard all the old records.

Christian is involved in some interesting things and has become a bit of a mover/shaker in Ibiza. Homies is now an established fixture at Pikes but actually started life in a Barcelona loft about 13 years ago. I have heard a few mutterings here that he never acknowledges the people who gave him a leg up at the start… Whether it’s true or just jealousy, I couldn’t say, but certainly, a lot of people move to Ibiza and then forget their roots. On an island that self-absorbed, I guess it’s easy to forget the rest of the world exists.

Is Pascal the real Ibiza Boss …?

can’t watch it here sadly

H is playing *528 tonight. Looks mega there. Very jellz anyone going

*I only ever went to the ‘zoo’ once back in 2008 and it was a strange one. The venue itself (Benimusa) was beautiful and hinted at something different. There were lots of people walking around dressed as tarzan and jane or in extravagant facepaint, but it was all undermined by the most boring music known to man (clive henry overdoing the tribal) so didn’t hang about

Thats one of the reasons I never went. During its peak around 2008 it seemed to be really on that Romanian house sound. Really not my bag. I did have the misfortune of hearing Raresh or Rhadoo in DC10 around that time and it bored me to tears. The same tempo and percussive drums for six hours ZzzzZzz

yep, it was pretty grim haha

Heading out again in 3 weeks. Sounds like our timing music-wise is absolutely awful this year but something usually comes up

I wish I could write a review as good as you did last year…

But well it was special once again. For many reasons. We were supposed to go to the last one on the 22nd of Sept to celebrate my bday turning 30! Since he cancelled the latter dates, we decided to push it to come for that one as rumours say that it might be the last one at Pikes.

Many Mercury Rising regulars were there, and it was just a very special atmosphere. Dancefloor packed to the brim since opening doors at 23. Almost didn’t leave the dancefloor until 05 am closing time. It actually was a bit more relaxed in terms of people than all the other years were you could barely move, so that was really great! Many Harvey and Mercury Rising classics such as Jibaro, I just can’t wait, Love in C Minor, Julio Iglesias one, … It was great. People are just cheering almost every song so it’s hard not to vibe haha I feel that last year the set was a bit more surprising and risky and exciting, last year I was mindblown just like you.

The highlight came when Eli (my partner) asked me to marry me on the dancefloor. :flushed: And gave me the ring for it. Obviously I said yes  For the ones that know me, it was very clear that this would be the case! Ah, it was a very very nice moment.

One of my favourite songs of the night was this italo disco number: https://youtu.be/UYownH9g0IY?si=twppfVeCNyZQTcHQ

Harvey at Pikes is really hard to beat. Such a special party, hard to put into words 🩷

Yes, playing Barcelona that weekend there at Salvadiscos and on Friday at Casa Bonay. Never been to any of the two. But looking forward to it

Casa Bonay is a bit more posh and controlled. A nice hotel bar and they do get really good people to play, but everyone has to sit around on sofas. The staff don’t like it if anyone stands. So it’s better as a more downtempo vibe. Salvadiscos is very different. Much more down to earth. Part record shop and part bar. People have a dance and sometimes get really involved. A massive sheepdog lives next door and often joins in too. The main guy David (with the white hair) is really sound and loves his tunes. You can play pretty much anything and it gets much more of a music crowd
