The Health Kick (Inside)

I had to go back to Northampton to live for a couple of years in the 90s to help my old man’s business out and took up kick boxing for something to do - it’s probably the most enjoyable exercise I’ve ever done, not to mention the cardio and flexibility beneftis and it’s always handy to be able to knock someone out if necessary

I’m taking a club boxing class twice a week here in Berlin. 5 rounds of boxing and 4 rounds of HIIT in a club setting (disco balls, lighting, [bad] techno). Never would I have thought it’d become my favorite form of exercise.

Jeez that is awful and seems to be all too common. How are we failing our young so badly. Very sad man. :pensive:

Yeah you don’t know what’s going on in their heads. An ex teacher of his lives near me and said its the third student he knew who passed and he’s only 33…

Ah shit news man. So sorry to hear that. I can’t begin to comprehend what these kids are going through. What’s the driver do you think? Social media, peer pressure, something else? Upsets me that they can’t even bring themselves to reach out and get some guidance and support.

A friend of mine was a well respected head teacher, early 50s. I used to love socialising with him. Fantastic sense of humour, great taste in music, beautiful apartment, loved and adored by so many people young and old. You wouldn’t think he had a care in the world. He hung himself a couple of years back. Floored everyone. Still can’t believe it now.

Aw fuck :slightly_frowning_face: Sorry to hear this. As someone who tried to take his own life, I really struggle with these things - I know the despair and it breaks my heart. Sending love.

Sorry to hear this, that’s very very sad. I’ve had personal experience with this in the 00’s and its still tough.

i’m kind of constantly worried about the kids - either i’m struggling to see the beauty and hope in this world that they can, or the younger people have good mechanisms (that i’m not immediately aware of) to shut out the noise and disheartening realities. or maybe both.

mental health seems to be graded on the mean - and if the whole world is suffering from a cynicism and depression (but all suffering together) well then that’s just shit, right?

I worry every day for my two. I’m consoled by the fact they are way smarter than I was at their age.

They have no choice but to become very political animals - they face challenges my generation couldn’t imagine. I’m hopeful they are up to it.

Went surfing last week at The Wave in Bristol. First time in over 30 years. Very rusty and exceptionally unfit but loads of fun.
