Just seen this. Perfect response!
New NY Times profile of Michael McDonald in a run-up to his new memoir. I had no idea about this nugget of Dan history. From NYT IG
Thatās ace! His harmonies on Peg are outstanding!

Doing IGY on a late night US tv show.
As one of the commenters said, this is what YouTube is for. Absolute gem.
What a way to play out a show. I like Donald on the DX7.
I ran this on our insta. I only say as the comments were so great.
Worked for a West London audio distribution / sales company some moons ago as a service engineer. My colleague on the bench next to me was a wisened old ex Pink Floyd backline tech and repaired alot of studio monitors. This was one of his reference tracks (basically the whole night fly LP) and some other Steely predominantly. But this track was his most played and I might hear it 10 times in a week. I was there over 4 yearsā¦ and I still think itās a pretty incredible record even though I donāt exactly love it.
Iāve heard similar things - it is a great system test track and one I use whenever I get a new home stereo component.
The early CD release of The Nightfly worth getting if you ever stumble across it in a charity shop etc, it sounds fucking brilliant.
Picked up a mint copy of Canāt Buy A Thrill on CD today for 50p from a charity shop.
Got the early CD and promo 12ā of New Frontier with Goodbye Look on the flip. They both sound awesome.
I donāt know definitively, apparently itās one of the earliest fully digital recordings. ADAT / DAT era pre CD. Lots of guys of an age used / use it as a ref for speaker or system check. I definitely heard it used at a trade show once on a bunch of line array speakers. Not longer than 15 years back even. Trying to say Iām not that old, here. But that was a while agoā¦ I certainly wasnāt around when it was a thing though. My colleague also used Grace Jones Libertango alot, which I preferred tbh and still use myself.
Has anyone had any experience with the new Dan vinyl re-releases? I donāt really buy much new vinyl, but Iāve read the source material and mastering are supposed to be quality.
Iād say itās probably difficult to find a bad pressing of their albums, particularly Aja, knowing how meticulous they were during recording / production.
The 2023 Geffen releases seem to be getting decent reviews, but the Analogue Productions 2 x 12ā releases are winning all the praise. Bit of a ballache having to change sides, but a minor detail. Oh and the expense.
I bought early Japanese pressings of Aja, Royal Scam and Gaucho and they all sound superb.
I donāt have any new issues, all 70s. If you can find them in excellent condition or above they all sound great, particularly UK pressings of Gaucho.
Thatās brilliant.
Current favourite Dan jam is Green Earrings. Immense, particularly the Funkadelic-esque guitar solo at the end.
See Juno and Phonica are selling this on 12
