I noticed the first Trainspotting soundtrack CD was released 30 years ago this week. all very iconic and zeitgeisty but how much of it still stands up? I still think the way much of the music was used in the film is fantastic, especially the dystopian visuals that accompanied Perfect Day and Dark Train but some of the indie feels very of its time. See also Bedrock for what you dream of, whilst I could happily never hear the other Underworld track again either. The real oddball on CD2 was euro cheeser Ice MC Think About the Way. I remember this being massive in Spanish holiday discos at the time, but I never quite understood how it made it into the film. Other films have tried to weld together different strands of music but this was so shamelessly pitched at people my age, ravers, indies, students and all points in between. Not sure a film like that could be made again, at a time when even ciggies are blurred out by censors.
Hadn’t seen it in years (and have never really been one rewatching stuff over and over), end of last year I stuck it on after giving up with the usual tedious scrolling. I didn’t even really know the leftfield track but sounded quite current in many ways.
Forgot about that one! Coach journeys <> Scotland were never the same again
Talking Leftfield this is so good… Not really many records that sound like it. Proper hardware business…
Bought the reissue of this a couple of years ago
Always loved the Taxi Driver OST which I think is now reissued/remastered?
And Midnight Cowboy. What a film!
I’ve got an original CD from the Far-east with included Syringe/Pen with blood in it. Mrs brought it back from HK, even thought it was a bit ugh even then.
Saw this again the other week and loved this piece…
I don’t always agree with (or even understand) Philip Sherburne’s reviews but this is a nice piece on Giorgio Moroder’s classic ‘Chase’ which still sounds amazing nearly 50 years later.
