Have pictures handy, since I did this with mates a few weeks ago - what a mess!

Treated myself to an actual painting for Christmas, this is by a friend of ours, Lucy Bristow

my mate posted a pic of his workshop in Edinburgh to our group, we were all well jealous of his range of tools
also, extra marks for the special forces laptop

OK, this austere looking set-up is not my actual desk per se, but it’s mine for the next few weeks while I’m a guest at an artist’s colony called Yaddo. Sharing it all the same because it has been used over the years (this room, and this very desk I believe) by Sylvia Plath, Philip Roth, John Cheever and many others. My rig at home might be a little more spacious, but this is pretty nice all the same.

Turntable behind desk would be well handy.

i tidied up a bit before snapping this photo. don’t know if that’s considered cheating.

My brain just works best in a clean space which is why I think mine is really tidy. I guess my theory is if it’s nice to sit at then I’ll stay at it and not find reasons to not do that…

It’s in Saratoga Springs, New York. It’s an incredible place. You have to apply (I did like four or five times over the years before they finally let me in), but it’s insane. You can have anywhere from two weeks to two months up here and they give you a studio, a bedroom, meals (which are excellent), etc, at no cost. It was founded by a wealthy philanthropic family a hundred years ago or so. Kind of insane to remember there was a time when rich people actually liked the arts. Sigh.

They invite writers, filmmakers, visual artists, and–hey, whaddya know–musicians and composers, so it is definitely worth a punt. It’s quite amazing, and also pretty delightful from a social POV. If I didn’t miss my wife and dog I’d never want to leave . . .

Mine is in a corner of our large-ish living room, because im usually up the latest at night. this comes at the cost of it becoming the defacto landing spot for random stuff, boxes, laundry, broken sewing machines, abandoned teenager art projects etc😣
