Random discogs item roulette

I appear to only have 14 records listed in my Collection on Discogs!

Not being a seller, I’ve never used the collection feature on Discogs, so it only shows any purchases which are a tiny fraction of my collection, so I asked Mrs Indulge to pull a random record from the racks… naturally, she chose a pink one.

A nice Dutch deep house EP from Orlando Voorn which I picked up in Vinyl Junkies. I think one of the other tracks was big in certain circles but for me it was all about “Smooth” which was is a massive techy groove and went down a storm in the darker Brixton railway arches.

Edit: just realised this is serentipitous as the last track I bought is a Voorn (Back To Basic, with Amp Fiddler)

Bought for the Soft Pink Truth remix, which i would play almost endlessly in 2002. I would play a weekly wednesday party with Calypso Steve & Martin Zero in a late night bar where the drinks were £1 each (later £1.50) but the selection was really nice. The crowd was a mixture of international students and the regulars from the big D&B and Techno nights in town. We were all so young that we just played for £20 each and rammed the entire place to the absolute rafters week in, week out. I would play this next to things like “Losing My Edge” and “House Of Jealous Lovers” but we’d also be playing things like Stereolab’s album at the time and all the neptunes releases. The night was meant to be a disco classics night, so we’d be dipping into that sometimes.

At the aforementioned Wednesday night one week, some school kids came in and handed us demos of their band. It was this amazing mix of indie, jazz, odd production and i guess sorta math rock. Only half of the band were at school, the other half were closer to our age. Once they were all old enough i actually started a night with them so we could book a lot of the similar bands that they knew, they would always close the night and i would dj in the gaps and try to keep a dancefloor. This was around the era of the Erlend Øye DJ-Kicks mix cd, and that was a staple at a lot of the indie kid parties of the time. So i would be playing a lot of records like this for the dancefloor alongside a lot of post punk records.

I had no recollection of what this record was, i had to hit play and then i remembered that i bought it after hearing it on the 808 State minimix for the Pet Shop Boys radio show on Radio 1 in 1991. I heard a low quality mp3 of the show maybe in the early 2000s after downloading it from a forum i think. I doubt i have ever even put the needle in the groove of this record.

That mix is pretty fun still tbh, i just stuck it on to refresh my memory.

Added to collection 8 years ago but probably bought off discogs a little earlier than that.
I got it for the Chairmen of the Board edit which I thought was immense. I just loved everything about it. Whenever I played it out, which i tried a lot, it never got the reaction I hoped it would. I gave up trying and decided it maybe sounded a bit harsh.

Excellent triple vinyl comp on BBE. Disco banger after banger from Mr Lee. A bargain 84 French Francs from FNAC on the Champs Elysses it would appear.

Not much that needs to be said about this one… A 50p find at my local boot sale. This has reminded me that I still don’t own it on a 12 so I need to put that right.

Lovely sun drenched Lovers take on the Sade classic. Pure bliss. Picked this up at a record fair last year for £25.

Killer 15 minute long slo-mo French boogie business on the B-side of this. Think this was a Discogs order from France a few years back, back when the shipping costs were still just about reasonable. The perfect loo/cig/drink break track.

Another boot sale find, a budget Mingus compilation with a nice track list.

“Side Issue” is a jam! Well worth the entry fee. The rest of this LP, not so much.

Remember buying this from the Indie Label Market at Spitalfields, it was in a cheap bin for 3 quid I think at the Far Out records stall. Quiet Storm (sampled by De La on Breakadawn) and Baby That’s Backatcha are great.

Bought for Rainstorm 2 around the time it came out, which is still my favourite track on it. Heard the ??? track out years later at Dekmantel and people were going nuts for it.

aw sweet, this thread is doing exactly what i want it to do. i keep going “i have that!” or looking at something and being like “damn, i wish i had that”.

three more randoms from me.

https://www.discogs.com/release/309297-Janet-Together-Again

i still contend that janet is the best jackson. “together again” was equally sad and uplifting, and for me anyways, cemented her sort of sincere, aware perspective that started with “control”. unlike michael, you could believe that janet lived among the rest of us.

whooooo hoover rave! loud, apocalyptic, and absolutely no nuance. this era of rave was fun as could be at 19, but at nearly 51 it’s a sort of different story. it’d be fun to do a top ten of buzzy hardcore, then make super lazy 110 bpm versions of them just to age them properly.

https://www.discogs.com/release/89450-Freinds-Lovers-Family-Being

damn, the roulette was not kind to me. it’s the era where i was buying a fair amount of peak time rave records. i loved the “in search of a cool place” EP, it was hardcore and jungly but also sort of FSOL-style sampletastic atmospheric. i don’t remember this ep nearly as well. rising high was - at times, - stupid, or clever, or sometimes a bit of both. i’ll need to drag this one out again to see if it’s a sound that’s come around again.

I really wanted the 12 by “The New Yorkers” which is basically the same song but longer, but it was way harder to find and more expensive so I bought this. Nice number but I don’t think I ever played it…

Bought 3 copies of this, two vinyl, one still sealed and unplayed, and the CD. The odds were strong!

I’m the opposite, having relinquished most of mine last year. However, the last of my collection (pre-sale) is still listed so I’m playing along for the memories…

https://www.discogs.com/release/55264-Bel-Amour-Featuring-Sidney-Bel-Amour

Purchased in 2000 straight after hearing Ashley play this at an early Faith party in Kings Cross - the one where it got a bit momentarily fruity between the Arsenal and Chelsea lot.

The instrumental version obvs, all other versions are absolutely gash

As someone in the comments says, Love On A Real Train vibes.

Someone give me two random numbers:

A number between 1-30
A number between 1-100

It’s my manual record shelf roulette!

Thank you.
