Pat Metheny Appreciation Thread

excellent!

Just remembered this collaboration with Norwegian singer Silje Nergaard from 1990. Quite lovely:

Long time fan here, too.
A few to add that haven’t been posted.

Beautiful music where Pat’s playing just shines through.

Some of his best music was with Lyle Mays.
Short but oh so sweet.

And again here with Lyle and Pedro Aznar.

Also, I can’t find it on my camera roll, but my local record store had a few Pat LPs that had a US mailing address scrawled on them. I asked the owner about these. He said that the person he bought it from knew Pat, and that Pat had personally written his home address on these records after a show so that they could have a correspondence. Wish I picked it up, would like to drop him a line. Sounds like a great guy.

So much good stuff here, a fair bit I’d never heard before. I thought I knew Pat, but with hindsight I’d just scratched the surface. Cheers all.

Great thread loads to go through that’s new to me. Thanks all!

While we’re here, discussing PMG - anyone else hear “Slip Away” in the earlier track “Chris”? Or is it just me?

Just too many to post in one place – definitely one of my most listened to artists in the last few years. I feel like I’ve trawled Youtube for all my favourite clips, but this ACL performance takes the cake for me:

Also, I ajust played in Kansas City (Pat’s birth place) this weekend, and had to drop this PMG rework from my friend Sam OB.

One of my favorite Metheny albums, though I think it was the last drop in the bucket to get him off ECM records:

I also love when he goes all Free Jazz. This album is a milestone, too, though not Balearic at all!

Pat plays an 80s Roland G-303 guitar controller that is connected to a G-300 synth. Pre-midi.

I’m not a collector of Ephemera so if anybody wants this they can have it. There were no matching records to go with it unfortunately. Eight pages plus cover.

In the funny way that these things happen, Meth has gone from a personal punchline (in the '90s and early '00s I saw him as an overly sentimental player and writer, obsessed with tone and virtuosity to the exclusion of more intuitive, freer playing) to an actual music hero. All it took was hearing “Are You Going with Me?” in a long-forgotten mix of Balearic tunes, followed by the realization that he wrote the melody for “This Is Not America.” He played a great show at UCLA a few autumns ago, where I was hoping he’d play this understated number (flipped by Pal Joey for BDP’s “Love’s Gonna Get’cha” during his '90s foray into hip-hop production) or at least touch on it in one of his medleys, but no dice. https://youtu.be/rCIasa6kO00?si=yxG_Q6GVmLcxmxVh

I listened to this when it dropped, and it’s a great listen. Pat talks about how much he practices in it, and as you might guess, it’s a lot.
