This is such a beautiful album. The track “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” in particular.

Have to thank my father for getting me into Pat from a young age. More synth guitar, please.

So many memories soundtracked by this beautiful music of this man and his group. Barely scratching the surface with these three in addition to all the others posted - and to be posted…

And this track always gives a glimpse of what a dream team Sakamoto-san and Mr. Metheny could have been

So much great music, such a unique and instantly recognisable sound. I really liked his collaborations with Mehldau and this one being a favourite, watching it live on that insane guitar makes it even more amazing

Too much to post, really, but I do want to second the suggestion of Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light, which might just feature the greatest live band ever.

Then there’s this, which goes to show you the man basically hit the ground running and never stopped…

A very young Pat with Gary Burton and Mick Goodrick, who if you don’t know then you should, as he was a big influence on Pat and other guitar players of that generation like John Scofield, Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie

By this time Goodrick had left the band and Pat stayed on for a bit longer. They did a few shows together, but never an album:

This was a fantastic tour too, with John Scofield. This band did record:

Later pat would do a trio album with Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier which is one of my favorites, called 99>00

As an insignificant PS, and maybe better in the Small Claims thread, I own a Paiste China cymbal that used to be Danny Gottlieb’s and is featured in a few of those classic Pat Metheny Group recordings. I barely play drums anymore but it makes me happy to just have it around.

Yes Mario. And so much great music to go through here from everyone. I didn’t know the Joni Mitchell. Going to enjoy digging into that…

Here’s all of it. There’s a double album, too, but it’s worth watching the concert film because the energy is just unbelievable and because there is an amazing version of Raised on Robbery with Jaco killing it. Joni was having a thing with Jaco then, he’d recorded with her, and for the tour he basically got her to bring all his jazz friends along for the ride. She doesn’t seem to mind it one bit. If you gave me the chance to go back in time to see one concert I think this would be it, for me.

I’ve been a pat fan for the best part of 30 years and never knew about this. Thank you Mario!

Really Balearic

Can you imagine any singer today with a backing band like that?

(of course singing is only one of Joni’s many many qualities…)

One of my favourite records ever, full stop, and a Mancuso fave too.

I played it at spiritland once, LOUD. Two guys in front of the booth were tripping and were totally blown away. Genius record.

Here from 4hrs 16ms in to the mix.
