Fragrantica.com really helped me choose. Might be a good place to start.

I have about 10 fragrances in my rotation now, some versatile all rounders, some for summer, some for winter.

A niche house I would recommend without hesitation is Tauer, in Switzerland. Andy Tauer came from outside the industry - was going on a trip to Africa with his mum and just sort of fell into perfume composition. He has built up a singular house with many lovely perfumes. I’d recommend getting a sample pack (for not much dosh) and going from there.

His insta https://www.instagram.com/andy_tauer/ - friendly guy & a mensch.

My wife helped launch Le Labo many a moon ago, and then moved on to work for Frederic Malle, and is probably the reason why you all break out in hives when you smell Santal 33.

L’Air Du Desert Marocain is an absolute masterpiece.

weren’t meant to be doing christmas presents this year and yet somehow I got roped into buying a bottle of byredo afrique for my wife. a bit too feminine for my tastes but a lovely smell. the shop were kind and gave us a box of free testers, this one being my fav
Eleventh Hour - Eau de Parfum 50 ml - Designer Perfume | BYREDO

popped into le labo and got some testers , noir 29 which I like, doesn’t seem too strong and good old vetiver , which I can’t make my mind up about, think it’s too strong for me and it reminds me of going to mass growing up

Ah brill. Some of the Byredos are amazing. Fell in love with De Los Santos this year.

I know Santal 33 is Le Labos big seller, but I cannot get enough of Another 13. To me it smells like the pages of a magazine, or the fresh smell of a record when you break the seal.

cool. I’ll pick up a tester of that next time I pass their shop.

Was Prada Luna Rossa for years, but have now moved onto Jo Malone Vetiver and Vanilla Cologne.
Find that as I get older, I prefer a more earthy and deeper smell.

Bergamote 22, Rose 31, Neroli 36 and if you’re feeling particularly manly, Oud 27 from the classics are the way to go. The city editions however are even better. Gaiac 10 (Tokyo) and Poivre 23 (London) are my favourites.

My wife thinks it’s crazy that you have such a large rotation by the way. Something about how a scent has to get into your pores or something. I’ve had many a night where she’s explained the science of it all to me and why every scent smells a little different on anyone based on certain physiological factors. Went to a lecture she did at Harvard on it and it was all epidermis this etc. All the students just wanted the samples.

Yeah those city editions are great, but they get more expensive every year. Gaiac10 is a beaut.

It’s sad that since Este Lauder bought them that the quality of ingredients has gone down a bit.

Yeah. Happens to them all eventually. The Frederic Malle’s I loved have all been neutered too.

Indeed. It’s amazing how much Este Lauder owns. It’s remarkable.

Yo. This thread is a pearler. Read through it last night. I know absolutely nothing about the subject. Started buying Tom Ford a few years back for myself and as a gift, but have stuck to a few tried and tested.

Haven’t got much disposable income at the moment, but bought a couple of recommended cheapies from the thread - ‘Wool’ (which suits me as that’s what I am - from Ormskirk) and the Lalique Encre Noire.

Looking forward to checking some more out.

Thanks man. I started off looking for a signature scent a few years back, and have since disappeared down the rabbit hole. I’ve got ten fragrances in my cupboard, and that’s already giving me anxiety.

Basenotes and Fragrantica are good places to start. Luca Turin has written a couple of decent books which are worth checking out also.

Best thing I’ve learned is to get testers and sample before you buy. I’ve lost count of the number of fragrances I loved when I first started testing them, only to find they gave me a headache a few days later.

Encre Noire is a beaut. Cheap as chips as well.

If you like that (as I do, too) his Au cœur du désert is even better. It’s like l’Air perfected.

Yeah that’s an absolute beauty too. Smells a tad sweeter to me. My favourite is one that he discontinued a while back called L’Eau. Gorgeous freshie. Kicking myself for not getting a full bottle. Really liking L’Air des Alpes Suisses too.

I think Les Senteurs are exclusive uk stockists. I have a few little 5ml minis too.

Those bottles though?
