I got a tester of The Zoo: Vetiver Rain, and lawdamercy I love it. starts like cut grass but with some benzine/petrol notes ike you mowed them yourself😅, then salty fresh residue from the petroleum and the mid softer vetiver, cedar, and tumbled leather starts.
I’m gonna by a bottle.
more than makes up for the questionable visual packaging design🤔
Extra specially large thanks to @elzorro for the amazing package this morning, you are a legend Sir.
Lovely Summer’y vibes with what to me is a hint of Cucumber/melon, Summer gonna smell great!
Love this place.
This thread is one of the reasons I love this place - loads of knowledge that I’m lacking.
Tom Ford Ombre Leather copy available?
Alexandria and DUA do ‘inspired expressions’ of Ombre Leather.
Alexandria’s is called Untethered, and DUA’s is called Passion. I’ve not tried either of them so couldn’t tell you how close they are, but they’re usually pretty good, and reasonably priced.
There are usually codes kicking around too if you’re a new customer.
Edit: Code NEW10 works for Alexandria.
i do my best to go unscented - my wife has a sensitivity and frankly, i don’t like the perfumes/colognes anyway.
but i do think it’s kind of funny when i buy used records and they arrive with their own sort of flavor. i put everything into my own specific slipcover so they don’t offend but i have loads of old records from the 80’s/90’s where they absolutely smell like the clubs i played in (and back then if it was a residency we innocently left our records there and they sucked up all the smells).
like a few people in this thread, i’ve been a massive fan of ADP for a while, but have seen the quality go down a bit and the price go up a bit more. I was looking on fragrantica and found a ‘uk cheapies’ thread, which only had like three or four suggestions, but one of them had a pretty appealing pallette and was only £23, https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Verset-Parfums/It-s-Done-59243.html. Plan to get a more pricey one when the I main one I have runs out but thought £23 was too good to turn down.
Anyone got any cheap ones they liked?
If you’re looking for summer cheapies, Alexandria’s Black Panther and Immensity are solid cheap picks. Clones of Tygar and L’Immensité respectively.
Caron - Yuzu Man is a banger. Quite lemony.
Nautica - Voyage. Appley aquatic.
Alvarez Gomez - Agua de Colonia Concentrada (ADP vibes). It’s a cologne, so you’ll need to reapply. Classic smell.
Alvarez Gomez - Agua de Colonia Barberia Concentrada. A bit spicier and barber shop esque. Lovely though.
Adolfo Dominguez - Agua Fresca. Another cologney type cheapy. Quite masculine. Also check the Cedre and Vetiver variants. Great cheapies.
Armani - Eau Pour Homme. Cheaper designer. Might be discontinued now. Classy cologne type structure.
4711 - Aqua Colonia Intense Wakening Woods (Green and foresty).
Dunhill - Icon (Silver bottle). Kinda Terre D’Hermes ish with Neroli instead of grapefruit. Lalique White is similar. Clean and a bit soapy.
Rochas - Eau de Rochas Homme. Lemon and cedar. Cheap as chips.
You know your shit! I know zero of these, will check out. thanks!
Couple more cheapos to try off the top of my head -
Afnan - Supremacy - great clone of Oud for greatness
Rocha’s - Moustache - clone of ysl tuxedo
And also, it’s called Moustache. Which is reason alone surely.
Punches way above its price point. Damn good.
If you’re into summer citrus aromatics and don’t mind paying a little more, this stuff is dynamite!
Smooth lemon, mint, basil and blackcurrant.
Cheaper if you order directly from Xerjoff. Discount for new customers.
That bottle though.
I secured a second hand bottle of 40 knots a few weeks back which is rather beautiful. Quite different to the notes described in fragrencia surprising
Excellent. Is it in the old style JTC bottle?
I love it, although it wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a bracing, salty affair, but to me it’s cosier with plenty of amber. I’m not complaining though. It smells divine.
Just having a look round their UK website and their reviews are pretty good tbf!
This thread has really sparked my interest in fragrances, but since I’m currently on a tight budget, I’ve been trying samples and some of the cheaper recommendations.
The Black Panther is easily my favourite of the cheapies so far. Think I’m going to stick with trying the Alexandria range for now, which is pretty extensive.
I’ve ordered a couple of different travel sprays to try out. I’ll post up a wee review when the time comes
Sampling is definitely the way to go.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve loved a fragrance at the beginning of testing and pretty much hated it by the time I’d finished the sample. It either became headache inducing, too cloying etc.
I’ve even blind bought fragrances because of hype and fomo, and been really disappointed. Expensive hobby.
