New Year's Day Secret Weapon

A bit of shameless crowdsourcing here - I’m playing a 3 hour set on NYD here in Sydney and there are 15 other DJs on the bill across 2 rooms.

What is a secret weapon track that would suit a day party and make the crowd all bug out with extreme happiness/excitement? Can be a chugger, a hidden Italian house gem, a funk weapon, a Balearic nugget etc etc.

Not sure if all these are available on digital, or if you have time to buy them on wax. Some def are though.

I think I posted this in the RnB thread:

there’s always the old, reliable C2 if the soundsystem is good enough to make the most of it:

slow chugger:

Another one that prefers good sound:

circular chugger:

I got a bunch more that I rely on to really make an impact, but I won’t clog up the thread. Happy to PM some but I know you know your stuff anyway

Thanks @walshtron - I didn’t have any of these!

I’ll be playing digital as well.

These things are so dependent on your crowd. What might play well to people in their 30s and 40s could be a complete dud for those in their 20s. I also feel that these moments inherently come with jeopardy - you can’t have the element of surprise without a degree of risk.

There’s a recording of Gatto Fritto at Spanners where he drops ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’, a song I absolutely love and would have sent me bonkers. I don’t think I’d have had the guts to deploy it myself at the end of a house/techno set though.

I played ‘Sledgehammer’ at the end of Cocktail Amore once, there was a moment of indecision in the crowd but it worked very nicely.

I love Francesco Del Garda playing this (massively slowed down) Charli XCX edit here -

Yep, these moments are definitely fraught with risk and can go either way. I like to err on the side of caution, play something the crowd will know but maybe a cover version. Something like this:

Our crowd is typically the 30-50 range who know not to come expecting to hear much music they know already. However, a day like New Year’s Day needs some familiar bangers of the unexpected kind. A mixture of both will be the tactic here.

Idjut Boys are the masters of this shit.

They recently brought hysteria to a small backroom in Leytonstone with the one-two punch of Dimitri From Paris’ edit of ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’ followed by ‘While You See A Chance

Another Idjuts one, they dropped this at a Lowlife a few years back.

I was at an idjuts NYE set where they dropped this closer to the end and it made people cry and shit:

They ended the set with Love is in The Air…

This is consistently the most Shazammed track in any of my sets. I feel like by the end people are singing along and having a blast.

Finally this is something I play that surprises a lot of people. Cheesy? Yes. But it’s U2 done by Italians so what did you expect?

To build up to the silliness:

Right time, right record:

Not sure when you’re playing but this works:

And everyone loves this record:

And maybe a bit obvious but it works every time:

Gets better as it goes on as well:

And this will get everyone in a good mood:

A bit of Prince always discharges this remit perfectly. Raspberry Beret, perhaps?

Some killers so far - thanks to everybody contributing!

I’ll be playing a midday - 2pm set and then an 8pm-9pm set if that’s any help referencing tunes.
