Started strong, got a bit mean and ended up with a happy ending.
I met Luke when I moved to Manchester in 2005ish and him and Moggsy were always very nice and patient with a bunch of us who started the âofficialâ pre-party for the Chair called Last Rites that occasionally kept the punters away from the Music Box a little too long. He always had something nice to say, was honest to a fault and generally was hard to talk to simply because any conversation no matter where you were was interrupted every 20 seconds by somebody saying hello to him. He just seems to know everybody and I donât know anyone who doesnât like him. He can be a sweetheart and heâs definitely a supporter of a number of nights and a hero to many from the guys who put on Hoya:Hoya, Naive Melody etc. Yes, he has a shtick but Iâd rather listen to an enthusiast who gets a little too excited playing brilliant music from all four corners than some po-faced, monotone myopic dullard.
Chris Fantasy - Fighting The Wind
Funny seeing this again, didnât know it was an actual âthingâ.
Is this track (on the tape) Quintus Project - Night Flight?
I have mentioned this in another thread about the wind-ups on DJH in the quests for an ID.
Chris Fantasy was one of the curveballâs thrown in with Japanese import, only available on laserdisc etc.
All good stuff!
Still not sure if this is an elaborate wind-up or notâŚ
Getting back to the original thread here lol, I have some acquaintances that are Northern/Modern soul collectors. The level of musical snobbery in that scene is almost beyond words, itâs a special kind of snobbery that generally comes down to how much the records are worth and how many of these dreary slabs of yesterday you own. They have set up an endless library of rules within the scene so that they can wall themselves into their exclusivity. I absolutely love that the availability of so much music now has killed that kind of silliness. How do you know how much a NS collectors record is worth? âŚDonât worry, theyâll tell you. I get ma coatâŚ
This all reminds me very much of the ânew powerâ article that was doing the rounds a few years ago
Oh yes, and arguably it killed the scene stone dead.
The stories of people finding two copies of a rare record and snapping one in half always make me cringe.
Yes itâs Night Flight. Have vague memories of a discussion about it on DJH.
Spot on. Thanks for sharing that. âDonât hoard it, channel itâ is a good lesson for a non-snob musical life.
As ever with this stuff and a super nice group of people it worked itself out but should we avoid coating people off on here? Just feels a bit like all of us are a bit better than that and the thought of someone coming on here and reading bad stuff about themselves doesnât really fit. Saying that its a forum and freedom of speech is important (remember world of echoes heheh) so its your world but I hope thats ok to voice my take on it. And not to open the conversation again as thats really not my intention. Really just to say how nice it was to see it work itself out. x.
And re the topic. I donât really get the whole elitism thing in music. If anyone asks what something is I tell them. The only time I ever put something down as white or whatever if I have to do a tracklisting is if its someone elseâs record that they found and are really proud of and want to keep to themselves. Thats their choice and I guess you have to respect that. Bar that why botherâŚ
Hereâs how they used to do it. I rescued this one when Terry Farley sold a lot of his records.
Iâve got a record from Moonboots that has a sticker that says âFuck Offâ on both sides. I still donât know what it is.
FWIW, I agree completely. Iâm just not comfortable seeing people and friends coated off. Just remember, thereâs a high probability that that person will be known by others on here.
Iâm deeply regretting throwing some shade in Paris Hiltonâs direction now in light of your comment H.
I think, back in the day, when the only available medium was vinyl, and people were getting booked off the back of the records they had in their collection, or theyâd spend years digging, it was more of a âthingâ. But nowadays, as has already been mentioned, pretty much everything is available in a few clicks, so itâs how these things are put together.
Two of the most generous sharers I know, who are both on here - @Mandarina and @Rob.J - no egos, just a love of sharing amazing records.
Paris hasnât been on here since March 2021, so I think youâre safe there Gav.
If youâre desperately trying to keep what youâre playing secret, it just shows your own digging has stagnated, surely?
And lets hope Eric Clapton never drops by
I used to see him quite regularly as he lived on the adjacent âestateâ to an ex gf of mine in Ewhurst, Surrey. Sadly, I wasnt aware back then of what a nasty piece of work he was, which was probably a good thing.
So true,. Donât know either why LU keeps popping up, from friends here who have played with him all over he makes the trip memorable be it music, banter, late night chats over chizzle or cheese board itâs all great when heâs about. So enough about him⌠A dj here was known for playing a record one last time in his set because it was becoming popular and when playing he would then rip up the sleeve chuck it out to the crowd, everyone would know what was coming next lol as soon as it finished he would raise it above his head and snap it in bits ⌠It did make for a bit of an atmosphere on the said night too. Stardust being one of the most memorable for meâŚ
