Music snobbery alive and well in 2022

Though tbf apparently he’s done tons in the NA community to rectify his wrongness… He seems to get big respect from those in recovery.

you know my thoughts on that crowd!

This has been an odd thread for sure - the only one so far on this whole forum that’s actively slated somebody, and yes, I was indirectly opening a gate when I asked a question about them in an earlier comment. It’d be good to get back on track and bring it back to the music.

Whilst the exclusivity is silly it can be fun though when a record is secret and everyone is desperate to find out what it is. I’ve formed lasting friendships via the art of spotting. When Carl Craig used to drop stone cold classics like confetti there was no more surefire way of getting everyone talking the next day.

I find a lot of northern soul collectors, and maybe it’s just the flat caps here in the US who buy rare records do it just because of the gravitas owning that revord brings with it and not necessarily for the love of the tune itself.

It’s not even about the records in Northern Soul… it’s the claims of the scene being about freedom but, if you don’t even dance within the strict unwritten guidelined way you’ll be ostracised. Ridiculous.
I met my wife when she was running NS nights and I helped set up. I used to turn the bass up and the mid down on the mixer and say, ‘there, doesn’t that sound better?’ But, no, they’d put it back to horrendous tininess. Weirdos.

Absolutely! It’s hilarious to me and I’m in a few groups where all they wanna do is post pics of records and comment “yup” as in “Yes I have that ridiculously overpriced piece of plastic whose purchase/sale by me will in no way benefit the original artist who made it”. I like to comment “I’ve got the repress” just to see them get angry, ha…

I posted a thread on some of the soul groups suggesting that it could be a great movement to donate your, now super expensive copy of the record that you have owned for 35+ years and paid one pound for. Back to the original artists that are still alive, as a way for them to either own a copy of their past, or sell to help fund their old age. Seeing as the artists are apparently adored so much by the NS community. I got a very silent response in one group, and was barred from another group. But I digress.

I’m in a wine group and wine has experienced a similar trajectory, largely exacerbated by social media IMHO. Much time in the group is spent dunking on these kinds of people who do nothing but bottle flex all day. Certain reference wines were always expensive, but obtainable if a few folks pitched in for a bottle or if you were able to find the right source that didn’t know what they were selling. Now they are all but unobtainable not only due to cost but also allocations. For a double vulgarity - certain people now practice the double flex - some rare as rocking horse shit African record + billionaire burgundy. As goes in music as in wine - true appreciation values something great, a dollar bin record or a humble yet stunning bottle.

A friend has two copies of this and he always said that the track Colm was named after him as he was doing the sound at the venue and he stood in playing with the band when someone didn’t turn up…

They were called Daft punk from that night on
