So what happens when you switch it on?
Apologies for lack of response on this, I parked this distraction in favour of other distractions.
This just arrived from a lovely ebay seller who chucked in some extra cables. Seems he was doing exactly what I’m hoping to and this should do the trick, £25 all in. Marvellous!
Partly why I asked - I run my usb into laptop via express card slot still on Win7 for music as it runs better than Win10/11 go figure
Seems like those old Apple FireWire to Thunderbolt cables are worth a bit and hard to get now. I ended up selling one recently on eBay for £60
did not pay that for it years ago ![]()
One of these on the way. Long time since I had such GAS. Love me a filter! The ability to chain macros is a total win ![]()
Right, well I connect the two things together last night. Both the express cards seem extremely delicate in the slot, coming out with the slightest disturbance. The computer (win10) says that the device is working properly. I believe the Motu drivers are properly installed and yet when I try to open the software it tells me that no Motu device is detected.
The feelings of frustration, rage and depression and an urge to throw the bloody lot out of the window were tempered with feelings of a determination to solve the problem and a resignation that 'this is what always happens, so this is why you play a guitar and have never recorded anything" ![]()
I’m £100 in, no closer to my goal and very happy to call it quits.
Tried updating the slot drivers on the PC? Or searching for updates?
Try a different sequence/order of starting things as my old Saffire interface was particularly anal about which order things were connected and powered on.
Ignore all the good willed advice above mate if you don’t get on with computers
. Its unlikely to be reliable. Return the card. Re-sell the MOTU or try and return it to whoever sold it to you, and buy a new, cheap focusrite USB interface or a 2nd hand new cheap focusrite interface. It’ll almost certainly ‘just work’. Save yourself any more headaches.
You’ve got express cards with Texas Instruments chipsets which is good( I’d gaffa tape em on the underside of the base to stop em coming loose)- I assume you have the latest drivers from Motu’s website for your model and the right cables.
Try factory resetting the Motu to fix issues with corrupt drivers:
If that doesn’t work only other thing I can think of is:
dodgy cabling or,
double checking FireWire Devices are enabled in Device Manager on Windows or,
your DAW configuration- if it’s an older pc it might struggle with higher bitrates/ sample rates -so try setting audio to 16bit/,44.1khz -usually found in ‘properties’ in the daw drop down menus.
Failing that see Tobar’s post
I’ve just heard that “trying is the first step towards failing” quote on the cricket commentary so will take your advice and keep it in my back pocket ![]()

Thank you! Yes I saw the texas instruments in the device manager.
I used to have the Little Professor when I was about 7 years old so knew this was top qual. ![]()
I will try the factory reset on the motu. It was already causing concern as all it shows when powering up is the bit rate and the controls seem to do nothing.
Will report back ![]()
edit, I cant perform the factory reset as the controls are unresponsive. The only thing that seems to change is the bit rate indicator and this seems random. I’m out of my depth with this and the idea of a 2x2 focusrite seems very appealing right now.
This machine belonged to a dearly loved member of our community who recently passed away. It came to me via a mutual freind so has good provenance. I was very keen to keep it going and sending it back is not an option and I’m happy with that.
I just don’t want to spend any more time on it.
Sounds like it’s bust
C’est la vie
Used to have one of these, hate Behringer, but this is amazing value.
Don’t feed the behringer beast… Or thomann if it can be avoided.
I went to school with one of the guys who is now high up at focusrite. He was an original acid house kid. And electro years before that.
I’ve now got a Scarlett, rock solid.
Audient interface here- really nice sound and great pre amps
