Music Production Tips/Tricks/Bits of Kit

I throw it in rekordbox to get the Bpm. Generally spot on (for a drum machine track).

Interesting…

Same, works much better IMO.

My edits are quite reductive, so I generally go through removing all the crappy bits first and then start arranging with what’s left.

here’s a weird question: i’d like to buy an analog multi-track mixer to mix stuff out of the box. i still love my old drum machines and samplers and effects processors and synths and shit.

but i want it to have some character. and buying a good ol (vintage) 24/8 mixer is cheap these days. i come from the land of mackie, so there’s lots of those up here, but i want something that will really color the sound and give it a chance to differentiate itself against all the other all-in-the-box records that come out these days. trying to be mindful of space too, i don’t need a giant desk, but if i could get an 8-bus then why not?

thinking about a soundcraft ghost 24 - apparently pretty customizable, you can have them modded/re-capped which “improves” the sound. to what extent, i have no idea.

also considering a midas venice board, but not sure which one. these and the a&h boards seem to be popular but not particularly regarded for their sound. would like someone to tell me otherwise.

lastly, looking at toft audio boards, as they seem to have really good reviews for a unique sound. these don’t come across the plate as often, and they’re more expensive (and from what i read, kind of a bitch to have repaired), but they are pretty and the right form factor for me.

anyone using a cool mix desk, and does anyone have anything they like or recommend? again - the idea is to get something that sounds good and unique, not necessarily feature-laden.

I’ve got a Soundtracs Solo
The eqs are great/v powerful & the pre-amps have a lot of clean gain thats enough for it to have a distinct spund in my limited experience.

Are you aware of Don Larking ?
He’s gor a lot of old Cadac stuff (broadcast grade so quite clean - so maybe not what youre after)

Got mine from him and he had it set up so you could audition a few different ones

Couple of months ago I watched someone dubbing with an analogue mixer on YouTube and I looked the model name up on Google, think it was maybe European. Could not find any for sale at all.

Can’t remember what it was called and despite going back through my YouTube watch history for the last 30 mins I can’t find the video either…FFS.

But it was decent sounding and had (importantly for me) quite a few aux sends.

I’m not helping much!

sadly i’m on the wrong continent to pop down to don’s shop, but that is cool. the TL audio board he has in right now looks fantastic (a bit on the large side, but that’s ok).

Anyone wanting/looking for a basic Midi keyboard, let me know. It’s an Arturia MiniLab II. Keys, knobs and pads and a nice portable size. Good mapping, especially with Arturia’s stuff. Fully working, but no USB cable. Yours for whatever it costs to post it from me to you.

This is the only effects unit I’ve ever wanted for real. These SOMA Labs guys don’t mess around.

If money was no object, it would be the full set of Moogerfooger pedals and a good spring delay. I use the Moog’s (vst’s) on pretty much everything - sound great and very simple to use.
