What I find really interesting about death at 8000 metres is the brain almost tricks people into acting against their own best interests. Accounts of people taking off their clothes because they’re too hot (but they’re actually hypothermic) and the brain being flooded with sleepy chemicals. It’s almost like it knows to prepare for the end and have ‘you’ kind of not interrupt the process.
Maybe similar to nitrogen narcosis underwater where you get a great buzz right up until the point where you pull your regulator out your mouth and start singing into it. Because the fish want to hear your version of Yellow Submarine. Dive and lie wrecked!
I had a colleague years ago who was averse to hard work. In his thick Cornish accent he’d often say-
“Ya know what the cemetery’s are full of? .… Dead heroes!”
*silent ‘h’ in heroes obviously
