I always like the idea of just going for something totally ridiculous and over the top, like I don’t know, ‘Relight my fire’, ‘Living in a box’, ‘The only way is up’ or something - just as silly as possible, make people smile or better still piss themselves about how daftly inappropriate the choice was. Especially because no doubt the expectation would be for something incredibly pretentious
Tongue in cheek based on the title:
But in reality, it would have to be something with shared memories and try and avoid one last effort to educate musically by dropping some obscure tune no one but me knew. Tempting as it would be, knowing they’d have to listen to it.
So as a tune for my wife it would be First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and to resonate with mates, possibly Beta Band/Dry The Rain.
In that vein
And of course if you want to double down on the finality…
Didn’t someone on here mention this a while back?
or…
Gotta be this
followed by uptempo Stevie Wonder or something
My wife has made the kids promise to hire a gospel choir to sing this at her funeral
One of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. A very fine choice.
Yes! Can’t remember who
I’ve booked this in with the missus already…
Not quite sure why aside from it’s one of my favourite pieces of music and it is somewhat melancholic.
Edit: it’s Some Velvet Morning
My sister and I chose this for my mother’s funeral, it was one of the pieces of music that cut through the dementia and took her back to her Motown loving youth, she used to sing along to it when we played a Motown Best Of CD for her.
I remember my mates father who was a taxi driver had the theme to Dallas as his ringtone for years and it was played at his funeral…
There’s a few but this is definitely on the short list
Took me years to find out what it was after hearing a snippet in the Jazzie B interlude on the Bomb The Bass album.
I mean this is a serious wormhole…Magnum? Cagney and Lacey? Maybe Taxi for a more deep vibe…
Brilliant.
A friend of mine died way too young in 2001. This was played at his funeral too, along with Frankie’s Tears and Let The Music Use You.
All incredibly moving in that setting.
