In Memoriam…

we were offline when dave jolicoeur aka plug 2 passed.

i do love de la soul - it’s hard not to. my favorite record of there’s is buhloone mind state - the last record with prince paul and while it has some trademark silliness, it’s more weary and sensitive than previous records.

it may be the early MTV or the festival circuit or the lack of guns on the album covers, but de la always got the white people pass and there’s something weird about how if the KEXP folks (or similar) are going to play hip hop, there’s a 95% chance it’s gonna be de la or ATCQ and never like black moon or mobb deep. i’ve always wondered if it was a difficult thing to create music inside of and for your culture, only to have the crowds at your shows looking ready for a snowboard swap.

anyway, RIP dave, you were a clever one.

Met Nathan briefly 4 years ago with mutual pals in Ibiza. Was good fun. Obv you just see the outside. I lost another pal Sean a year later who threw himself into a canal. In his case I knew things weren’t right but yeah… hindsight… known a few other people, mostly male/50s who struggle to open up, who used to cane it and who then turned into recluses… sometimes you can’t force it, a case of knowing when/how to reach out but not stick your nose in too much

Just realised there’s no mention of Burt Bacharach’s passing on here as the forum was down…

“Why do I go on and fill my life with little things,
When there are big things I must do,
And lots of dreams that really should come true,
Before I’m through”

Wayne Shorter was a monster. A lot of people aren’t really aware of just how many songs he composed, and how important a composer he really is. Everyone knows Footprints, but the reason Art Blakey was so pissed off at Miles Davis for “stealing” him from his band back in the 60’s is that Wayne was doing most of the composing for the Jazz Messengers, and went on to do a lot of the heavy lifting in Miles’ group, too. A total complete giant of a musician, I’m lucky to have seen him live a few times. RIP

i’ll be honest, i don’t know much about pulp, or steve mackey specifically. have a few albums, enjoyed some stuff here and there - but pulp is/was a much bigger deal in the UK than over here in the states.

Yeah, Shorter’s solo output is enough to put him in the upper pantheon…let alone the second Quintet…let alone Weather Report…let alone Jazz Messengers… his resume is so ridiculous. Love those stories about how Miles wouldn’t fuck with Wayne Shorter’s compositions because they were so good…

A great band, really sad news, they are playing some big reformation gigs this summer and he had chosen not to take part, maybe this is why.
