In Memoriam…

I played it as the last record on a Low Life boat party - around 2009?

RIP Sly indeed,
will remember him for the two Mobo albums by Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe with the double rhythm section of Sly & Robbie and Marcus Miller & Omar Hakim all together, e.g. one of my favourites here:

  • little remark though about Grace Jones’ Slave To The Rhythm, that’s William ‘JuJu’ House from Washington DC’s GoGo band E.U. on drums

Very sad, RIP Sly.

Don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad record he (and Robbie) has been involved in. One of the first records I bought was Boops, after hearing it at an under 18’s disco (and then heard Bill Brewster play it at a Low Life years later and it sounded just as brilliant and different to everything else).

Have loved this one for ages and picked up a copy recently:

The Grace Jones film bloodlight and Bami has some great footage of sly and Robbie in the studio with grace. Her mobile phone call on her Nokia to them are quite amusing. It’s a great watch though that film.

Although I don’t think sly and Robbie play on that one (I always thought they did but apparently not).

I read the same yesterday
Drummer was the main Washington Go Go drummer

Oh that’s sad. He did a huge amount for uk hip hop. And early sampling with those Music of life lps.

Oh man, that is sad news. Spookily, I’ve literally had this ready to play on the next show for the past few weeks. Was going to put it in the Covers thread.

RIP
