In Memoriam…

Sad to read of the death of the critic (& much more) Greg Tate, always enjoyed his contributions to numerous music docs i’ve watched over the years.

One of the best compass point tracks for me. Played loud it’s fierce. Sad news.

What an unbelievable musician, the breadth of styles he has played on, created and influenced is mind-blowing. So very sad.

Sad news. No idea how many records I have that he’s been part of, but it’s a lot.

Warm Leatherette was one of the most amazing things I heard when I was 18 or so, my ‘Auntie’ had rung to ask what I wanted for Christmas and I told her new Grace Jones album. Being a farmers wife from Maccelsfield she knew nothing about music or Grace in particular. She rang my Mum to say she’d never been so embarrassed buying it in Stockport, and was she sure I wasn’t going ‘queer’. Got a right bollocking. One of my most treasured records tho obvs, always chuckle when I put it on.

I only recently heard Chrissie Hynde’s Private Life for the first time , which was a weird sort of deja vu because I only heard moodswings state of independence after donna summer’s, but yes anyway, top album, although I slightly prefer Nightclubbing. When people ask for a musical period I’d love to have lived through, early 80s Island Records would be right up there.

i love hearing about the local, influential djs of yore. granted, this isn’t the best way to learn about them, but it’s interesting nonetheless. i had never heard of this guy, and i’ve been into detroit shit for yeeeears.

Robbie played on records by Sinéad O’Connor, Ian Dury, Bob Dylan, Britney Spears, Serge Gainsbourg, Simply Red, No Doubt, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Madonna, Joe Cocker, Marianne Faithfull, Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones, Sting, Joan Armatrading, Carly Simon, Mick Jagger and Yoko Ono. He even played bass on Herbie Hancock’s, “Rockit”!

If I was putting a super group together, Sly & Robbie are my rhythm section without a second thought.

My cousin says he appears on over 50,000 recordings (can that be true???)

That would be one a day for 136 years!

that guy was so fuckin’ cool. what a great musical career and influential in all kinds of ways.

and just as good - he was executive producer on both “repo man” and “tapeheads” which might be my favorite two movies of the 80s.

Love so much of his production work, too. This arrangement of Steve Young’s “Seven Bridges Road” for Ian Matthews (later pilfered by the Eagles) is a beaut:

"Mensi of Angelic Upstarts finally succumbed to the Covid that he had been fighting in hospital for the last couple if weeks. The charismatic singer wore his heart on his sleeve and his band dotted punks second wave with a series of classic singles. With a combination of terrace anthems, a genuine raucous spirt, street politics and an unexpected pop nous their music stood out in punk’s second phase.

Mensi had the conviction and the charisma and a genuine heart that made him a great on stage presence but also a total diamond off stage. I have many memories of great gigs but also a totally warm and kind hearted person who was a joy to share festival stage with and helped to contribute to his folk hero status."
