In honour of Herbie’s birthday (his 86th), I’d love to hear some of y’alls favourite Herbie tunes / deep cuts / YouTube clips (his Sesame Street appearances are legendary).
I’ll kick things off with this absolute jam:

Love love love Nobu.
Where do you start with Herbie? So many tunes.
I won’t post too many, but these are a few faves.
Sampled by The Young Disciples. I think someone in the forum recommended this to me.
Mr Hands is one of my fave Herbie albums.
Slum Village innit.
May as well get it in first. First jazz funk tune that blew me away.
Saw him at The Barbican a couple of years back. He’s such a warm, likeable character.
Too much to post right now as it’s late. Herbie is one of my favorites. I’ll be back with some earlier stuff.
i think herbie is my all time fave. some are in parallel, but none higher. three from different eras.
i will still stop and listen to this, all the way through, every time. doesn’t matter how many times i’ve heard it before. every time.
can you imagine hearing this for the first time in 1973? i would have lost my ever-lovin’ shit.
underrated album.
So much amazing music to choose from - a musical colossus.
I love this gentle tune from this 1975 album. Hang Up Your Hang Ups is the big dance tune on it, but Bubbles has something about it:
Would love for this to get an official release.
Did the main theme become Actual Proof? Or vice versa?
Think I first heard this at the Lyceum, blew the roof off.
Biggest tune for me at a recent Lucky Cloud, huge sound!
Was checking out to transcribe the incredible bass work by Paul Jackson on this one last week and did a post on Instagram but wasn’t aware of Herbie’s b-day, sweet! Don’t mean to spam too much but kind of happy with how it turned out :
Herbie was/is my gateway to a whole nother world…musical genius but also tech nerd extraordinaire with a degree in electrical engineering forever geeking out over the latest gear. Have seen him a few times, most recently in 2021 where he played a bank of synths, a gorgeous Fazioli grand, and a keytar. He leapt in the air multiple times whilst playing the keytar. Also his story of getting sober and his dedication to Buddhist practice is truly inspiring.
Space/future jazz masterpiece
One of his sweetest :
Bonus : Herbie on keyboards on one of Stevie’s greatest
So many good tunes already posted, a few of my favourite additions:
He is very candid about addiction and recovery in his autobiography, definitely worth a read:
He also played on many other jazz fusion artists’ LPs, e.g.
One of my favourite album covers too!
