This is such a great collection of stories and if you listen to it as an audiobook Herbie narrated it himself, it’s so engrossing I almost crashed the car listening to it once!
Hearing how Donald Byrd took him to New York from Chicago as an unknown and told him how to get his Blue Note deal, and subsequently introducing him to Miles Davis is one of the greatest mentorship stories ever
Herbie knew everyone and there are so many great anecdotes in the book, hanging out with Tim Leary and doing acid, sparring with Steve Wondwr to see who could get the newest synths first, his journey through Buddhism - you can listen to that velvet voice for days, and he’s such good company!
I always enjoyed wigging out to this. I’ll get me coat…
Covers?
That Mouzon album is an excellent inclusion, and Do I Have To is the pick for sure. Hancock and Hubbard et al are also on this Mouzon LP too which has a few bangers on it, perhaps my fav is this one:
Such a great thread topic!
Went looking for Flood, the live album recorded in Japan. Always remember seeing it on mail order lists but had never properly checked it out. Then stumbled on this blinder:
OK, one last one. Love this so much.
On the covers - the Kimiko Kasai version of “I thought it was you” is pretty sweet but I can’t find it anywhere online… ![]()
He’s on piano and backing vocoder vocals on that, too.

The Directstep version does me in too. Around the 8:15 mark onwards. Herbie off on one. Gorgeous.
Eddie Henderson’s version of Butterfly (also featuring Herbie) is a cracker too.
Ah yeah I thought he was involved ![]()
So many gems here, thanks for contributing everyone!
Loved seeing all the collaborations / records Herbie’s played on, and it reminded of me of this classic, and how wild it was to learn that Herbie’s playing on it!
Here’s three more favourites:
Also, a handful of clips of Herbie being Herbie.
A couple of party starters…

Came here to post “I thought it was you”. The official video is great too.
“Flood” was one of the first Japan-only albums I sought out early in my music journey. It was in the early days of GEMM and I managed to secure a copy of the CD…felt like I’d uncovered a store of treasure…
GEMM! I’d totally forgotten about that.
