Going digital

This is really useful - thanks v much

hah - yep, that was my fallback solution if RB becomes a bit too much.
I can see how the interface is super useful, although I don’t need the Hot Cues, loops or other tricks just yet. Useful to have once I’m more familiar with what the software can do.

i could probably look it up on the internet, but i’ll just ask you friendly people.

so i do NOT like rekordbox so far - it just seems like complete bloatware. i have a mac M2 pro with 16gb of RAM and it still seems slow and laggy and here’s what’s vexing me: i use a scarlett 18i20 (a really common audio interface) - and recordbox recognizes it - but if i choose it as an audio source, it refuses to pass audio, and the moment i change to a new track, it resets back to the macbook’s speakers. it’s impossible to get the 18i20 to be the default.

anyone know why it’s doing that? is it because i’m using the free version?

I’m new to it, also using a focusrite. Works ok for me but connecting the controller was a factor when setting it up in “external mixer” mode ie. to output to soundcard split channels. First impressions are it’s a load of sh*t much in keeping with everything else pioneer have made in the last 15+ years… How they are accepted as an “industry” standard says alot about the “industry”.

Did you try mac sound settings to bypass the rekordbox setting altogether?

i think i figured it out - does rekordbox only support 16/44.1? once i set my focusrite to that bit/sample rate, it started to work.

Could very well be the case.

Hi - I wanted to thank everyone that weighed in with their helpful advice to my queries about going digital via RekordBox, etc a month ago.
The RB software thankfully stopped that weird laggy distortion thing on my laptop after a while. Not sure what was going on there but glad it rectified itself.
And, if I hadn’t read this thread, I wouldn’t have been aware that some CD-Js won’t recognise your file/ format once it’s loaded onto the USB. This avoided cardiac arrest at the party (but also limited what I could play). Ah well. It worked out OK in the end.

One further question - and there may well be a dedicated thread elsewhere on the forum, so apologies for derailing this one. I did have a good look but couldn’t find anything.
The party organiser would like to send a mix out to the guests. What is a simple way to record a live mix from my mixer (Urei 1620LE) into the laptop, please ?

There’s a thread called ‘Best Digital Recorder’ or similar.

That’ll be the one then!

Cheers, @elzorro & @howler

If you’re using wav/flac files I tend to convert these to aiff files, which play on pretty much all CDJs I’ve come across. This software does it for free: Free audio converter for macOS and Windows

Good to know - thanks, @Silkman

AIFF also better because it holds metadata.

you can also import to audacity to rewrite the meta data, then export as aiff

Purchased myself some XDJ700s a few weeks ago and I must say that I’m really enjoing them so far.

What im not particularly enjoying is prepping tracks on Rekordbox. Currently im just using it to analyse my tracks and add them to playlists. Am I missing out on much by not setting multiple cue points and not fixing the beat grids? That doesn’t seem like much fun to me, but if it’s gonna add to the experience, then maybe I should consider it?

I have a gig at a new place on Saturday, and just found out that they have no turntables! So looks like I’ll be diving in at the deep end and doing my first ever digital set!!

Fixing the beat grid is useful if you want to be able to use the sync button. Then you can take off the headphones and socialise with people and still do long smooth mixes at the same time, just by using the screens.

I’m not that sociable when I’m DJing!

I’ve dabbled in the sync button, but cant see me using it much tbh. Not that I have a strong aversion to others using it. Provided the music is great obviously.

Depending on the kind of music you play, fixing the beat grid is a futile exercise. Disco stuff especially, it simply won’t help. Setting up loops beforehand, though, can be a real help. Turn quantise off to loop disco, mind you.
