Eddie Howe wouldn’t be the worst option. I think he’s shown he can do the cultural stuff and his players buy into it; he’s good with the media; he tries to play effective attacking football without overcomplicating it.

Whoever it is needs to be brave and have a system, knowing not all the “star” players will fit into it at once.

It’s definitely the right time for a change.

No Eddie Howe without Jason Tindall, unfortunately.

International management is just so different to club football. Southgate did well in terms of being a leader, but he perhaps lacked tactical nous. Which you need but in moderation compared to club football. Something like starting Kane no matter what is just beyond me. He clearly wasn’t integral to England’s system or whatever shape Southgate tried to instill as it hardly worked. Can’t imagine someone a bit less sentimental sticking with his majesty’s Harry.

And speaking of Harry, give it Redknapp. Would be a great laugh. He’s only 77…

What does Jason actually do?

Is he a coach or just general cheerleader?

The thing I always notice about international football is that it is Ferrari’s on the pitch and Cortina’s in the dug out. Don’t think club sides are falling over themselves to get any of them leading their charges.

No one knows but he’s the most animated touchline helmet I’ve ever seen. Must be good.

In all seriousness I do like Howe. But he does seem a very training ground kinda guy and that ‘luxury’ just isn’t afforded in international management.

LOL. Absurd.

Whaaat?

His lack of positional sense was a key factor in both Spain goals in the final. Looked distinctly past his best throughout.

I think that’s the best England set up we’ll see for a long time. It’s a great shame he’s resigned and I suspect it’ll be back to business as usual now with regular quarter final exits from major competitions.etc.

I hope I’m wrong though

Certainly had shortcomings as a manager from a tactical perspective but I think he brought an emotional intelligence that a lot of managers lack which brought about motivation in the team which we hadn’t seen for years

He left them in a better state than he found them which cant be a bad thing.

Zizou for England!

Alternatively, I think Potter would give it a fair go. He did a lot with a little at Brighton and the consensus seemed to be that he is a great man-manager. I never thought of him as a good fit at Chelsea. He feels, to me, like a natural progression from the ethos of Southgate (but more tactically astute).

I read an interesting comment today where someone attributed the improvement in England fans behaviour to Southgate’s achievements, in that he changed the expected but resented early elimination trend to a more positive, hopeful one, with extended runs in tournaments. Feels credible to me and a great credit to him and his team.

Wonder if Southgate has been offered a big club job… overseas maybe?

Saudi league will snap him up

Hope you’re wrong too.

Such a shame he didn’t get staff in who could make up for his tactical shortcomings when so much else was right.

Thoughts on having a foreign manager manage England? Carragher had said in an interview today that the ‘England should have an English coach.’

Personally think it would be mad for Zizou to take a job in which success will be judged in relation to Southgate’s - he did ultimately take the team to two finals. Tough ask for anyone who follows.

I doubt playing style will be too too high on the FA’s criteria when deciding who gets it. Which is why Southgate was good to be honest. He ‘gets’ England, the fans, the culture, ‘the years of hurt,’ the expectations, the ludicrous media etc.

I just can’t see a new face improving on the progress he made.
We’ve had too many in the past that haven’t come anywhere near to what he achieved.

Klopp?

they couldn’t afford him

My only hope is that there are internal FA staff who lead or are deeply involved on all those culture, team building, diplomatic and other off field processes who will transition them to the new manager, but if not or they go then, yes, we could easily go back to pre-2016.

Ah yes the good old reliable FA.
