Got to hope yesterday was like Eng / Morocco 86 or Eng / Egypt 1990 where it’s so bad that the only way is up. Difference then was Robson was willing to switch it up when it’s not working, while Southgate seems stuck with a system that doesn’t work🙏

the problem will be that Southgate takes the last minute drawing level as vindication of his plan to bore the opposition to death and rely on individual moments of inspiration.

Unfortunately history belongs to the victor. Southgate will feel his reticence to make changes and his ongoing reliance on underperforming star players was vindicated by a moment of genius from Bellingham. We won, so maybe he’s not wrong. But wow, it was another turgid and hugely depressing performance overall. Surely something has to change for Saturday?

3 lads who grew up within a 3 mile radius of each other in Stockport played for England yesterday, just a shame it was in that underwhelming display.

Really looking forward to reading the inside story of this tournament, it can’t be all smiles and back slaps throughout the squad and coaching set up that we’re led to believe. Egos are back in town, and that’s not just the old git inside of me saying that. Just look at the half time adverts yesterday, the goal celebrations and surly post match press conferences. They tell a story.

And there have been a few hints of dissent from the party line - Kane claiming no knowledge of instructions on how to press (big load of bullshit surely!), Saka coming out publicly saying he doesn’t want to play at left back, Toney’s apparent disgust at being brought on with 2 mins of injury time left.

We were lucky as fuck yesterday but for the main part it’s been like watching a car crash in slow motion for the past 3 weeks and yup I totally expect more of the same next Saturday.

Yeah I’ve been having the same thoughts. It all feels similar to the debacle at the South Africa WC in 2010, when it all eventually came out in the wash that all was not well in the camp.

As a Liverpool fan I do find it mad how Trent doesn’t get in this side. Being played out of position and scapegoated. Not sure what the thinking was to play him in midfield in the first place, without him ever having started a game there for club or country. I feel for him.

Imagine the reaction if the lad was positioned where Walker was for the Slovakia goal yesterday. Neville wouldn’t have shut up about it.

You can tell the players aren’t happy from the body language alone. Doesn’t look like a squad that is champing at the bit to spend another two weeks together.

Most telling was at the final whistle where the fringe players could hardly bother celebrating.

Walker has been caught out like he was yesterday all year long for City. I agree that Trent wouldn’t have done any worse in that instance but his dead ball and crossing ability would’ve given a much needed variation on a southgate theme.
