Still remember the first time I saw this album, it had lasting impact on me.
I was in Mr Bongo’s and this record was on the wall, there were a few heads and one of the guys who worked there looking at the record and I heard them talking about how it has a good break on it. I was real confused, why are they looking at a record with hillbillies on it, I was new to the breaks game I thought everything was still James Brown related!
I love the album artwork/photo, I guess how I first saw it just adds to my liking of it.
Probably not as impactful as it was on releases but Rap albums just didn’t look like this at the time. I bought this on a visit to London, my friends went off clothes shopping and I went record shopping, when I meet them a few hours latter I showed them this record and I remember one of them asking “are you sure its hip hop”. That’s how different it looked to everting else coming out at the time.
And this could almost be another thread… Awful covers that detract from the aural pleasures lurking within , Gene and Carla rocking what could well be quadruple denim (pretty sure they won’t be wearing jumbo cords or Farahs).
Apologies in advance for how many posts i’ll end up filling his thread with.
Here are a few to start with from Brian Blomerth aka Pups In Trouble for instrumental ambient/cosmic country outfit North Americans and a couple he did for Anthology Recordings.
I just absolutely love the look of old cars from the 80s and 90s. I mean you couldn’t really put a new car from 2024 on your album cover because the majority of modern cars look the same and have no personality
These two because not only do I love the covers they remind me of my mum taking me to Our Price in Harrow to buy them. Some older kids from my school were taking the mick when I was holding them before going to the counter, as they’d already been out for quite a while. When I was buying them I turned around to see my mum giving them an earful… mortifying at the time, but great looking back.
Two of my favourite LPs there, although The Perfect Beat comp has the dubious honour of being the only cassette I ever bought - coz the b-side has ‘bonus scratch mix versions by Froggy’!
(continuous DJ mix in today’s language)
Edit - my tape disappeared years ago - if anyone has a decent copy of the Froggy side I’d be eternally grateful! Its on YT here ’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAWUrp9RgMk ’
