Annie Nightingale used to play “The Motorcade Sped On” all the time on her show.
When Charlie Marbles made that film he decided for some reason to leave my role as crew founding member completely out of the story. I never found out exactly why he did that(he said for narrative reasons) but it has caused quite a few heated discussions on breakdance forums over the years. It appears that members of the hip hop community are quite protective of their early history. The whole thing was firstly quite upsetting to me, then ultimately quite heartwarming for me when I could see that I had people who I had never even met in my corner willing to right wrongs.
Apparently the most stolen book Thames & Hudson ever published
I’ve still got the NME single of that! (you reminded me)
I made a mix of that 80s electro and breaks stuff in a cut and paste style a few years ago as a sort of tribute to Jazzy Jay. I definitely learned quite a few things from those old zulu beat radio shows and the various mixes floating about.
This was another Double Dee & Steinski (and Adrian Sherwood) related jam that is easily missed.
i was a little too young to take it all in at the time, but i had/still have a very good friend who mentored me through the early 80’s stuff that i had missed.
i would often pick up stuff for 3 quid from Rod’s in Afflecks or off Keith (Manny record dealer) and as a result, i have a pretty decent collection of OG electro 12’s.
this is one i got off Keith in the early 90’s, that i still often pull out cos it’s a killer groove, it’s a killer, killer groove
Not sure if this thread is meant for strictly older Electro trax but what the heckin’ flip - here’s a really recent release I nabbed today at a local store in anticipation of playing at an electro/detroit/acid/bass party we are hosting in a few weeks - I fucking love this sound.
Anyone go to the jam in Jubilee Gardens in, I think, 84? GLC thing.
All i remember is Westwood played. It was mobbed and ended in a near riot, absolute mayhem. Me and a mate climbed a tree to avoid the madness.
Yeah I was at that one. There were a few doo’s that ended up like that from memory. It’s the first gig that I remember Westwood getting heckled by the crowd, something that became a bit of a tradition.
Some good photos of that Jubilee Gardens jam on Getty Images (would post but couldnt find a link that collated them all - just search on the site)
Promo clip I made for our upcoming Electro/Hip Hop?Acid/Breakbeat night using a bunch of footage from clips posted in this thread! Thanks to the posters…
This was the place to be in London circa '85(apart from Convent Garden and the pit) all the heads were at these sessions. Live To Break/London Allstars, Zulu Rockers, STN, and lots of crews from other parts of the UK. The atmosphere was amazing.
Have we had this yet?
John Rocca - I want it to be real (Arthur Baker mix)
