I always winced at all those Rampling, Farley, “yesterday we were assaulting a child from another town because football, but today we are on different drugs so we play music” shitheads. All that football/everywhere violence was why I originally left the UK. I always liked underground culture because it was a reality where idiots that went beyond their worst selves because they couldn’t make friends were generally not welcome. So when all that crowd decided they wanted it too was an uncomfortable time for me. All this crowd trigger me because they are a large part of my traumatic childhood. Sorry to get heavy, but no-one forced em to be assholes.
There always seemed to be an element of sheep/herd mentality with Farley’s narrative. Its all about “we wore this” and “we played this but not that”.
Maybe i interpreted it wrong (+ cant articulate it properly) but it doesnt exactly seem to embrace individuality and acceptance of others.
Was that posted in response to the ARC after party thing?
Scenes have always had that element of ‘look’ and belonging.
Have you read The Secret DJ stuff about Proctor?
Yeah for sure. So maybe it follows that someone attracted to the “uniform” and sense of belonging in a gang (football, NF or otherwise) would look at a musical tribe/scene in the same way.
If thats the case then someone like TF was never going to be a hip hop head in London, where he wouldve felt like more of an outsider.
All just speculation obviously.
Boys Own was always extremely cliquey and snidey about people who didn’t fit the identikit. Always had a similar vibe with Faith tbh.
The Combat88 stuff on the old Faith forum had a really nasty under current I always thought
Faith could be cliquey but it did satire very well. Modern dance culture certainly needs more thorns in its side. 200€ to listen to garbage in Ibiza ffs…
Hacienda Classical enters the chat
Hahaha
Yes agreed. Don’t want to be over dramatic about it but I personally found some of it a real turn off - all the tribal stuff.
I experienced a huge pile on one day on Faith when Farley was sprouting off about “the moslems” and other horrific nonsense so I replied to one of his posts with: “Well that’s not very house”. And in that moment got so many replies etc that basically made me think that maybe it was house. I never posted again,
And if you look at the US EDM scene it’s all Trumpers pissed at the minorities without a single sense of history or irony.
My friend went to faith do in London and said it was really grim. Loads of cabbies in their 60s wiped out.
Some of us are still in our 50s… just
that’s sad to hear because I still have fond memories of the faith parties. Easter 2006 - Turnmills (never my fave club) played host to one of the greatest London lineups ever with so much choice and the atmosphere on the main floor when Rocky and Ame were playing was unreal. In my hazy memory can still hear that carl craig remix of delia & gavin ricocheting around the room and it felt like everyone simultaneously came up.
Ive been to some of the recent Faith parties. They were good. Regisford was great at 93 Feet East. Brighton and Margate rocked. It is their 25th anniversary in March and Musclecars are headlining, which makes it a ‘must attend’ do.
It is a difficult line to tread - keeping your old punters happy, whilst also appealing to a younger crowd. 25 years in clubbing terms is the equivalent of being born in 1867 rather than 1967.
For the record, I think Terry is a very decent man. I dont think he should be lumped in with Rampling’s nonsense.
I completely agree with this.
While Faith often has decent guests, I mainly go as its the last place left to see some of the people I’ve been clubbing with for 35+ years. TBH I think its great to see so many people of my age group still out, people out with their kids etc, while none of the youngers I’ve asked about it have any complaints about the age mix.
It can occasionally be a bit flat, but they’ve also achieved some magic vibes i.m.o. - Luke Una outside at The Cause or that Regisford room - and thats as much down to their mature (as in knowledgeable) crowd as anything else.
I always enjoyed the faith board tbh, maybe I didn’t go on enough to see any pile ons. The party the had for Kenny hawkes in Shoreditch was brilliant.
Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience marc, you’ve always come across as a thoroughly decent bloke both here and on electriks way back when. Think I might have actually spoken to you at aficionado once.
Unlikely that many on here ever went on global underground or bedrock boards but they were THE places for cliques and pile ons. Seem to remember John digweed himself had to step in more than once…
I think that was standard behaviour on most forums back then until everyone gravitated to social media and started doing it on there instead!
