Oh hello. I did my A-levels in Wigan and then worked there for years afterwards. 1991-2007.
I was an Alans regular in all that time. I pretty much went in daily in the 90s.
Don’t know if you’d remember me. Duncan. Bought Hip Hop and anything vaguely Hip Hop related.
I was like a fish out of water in Wigan. As a teenager doing my A-levels, I was listening to De La, Redman and Cypress Hill. My friends listened to Erasure.
When I worked there full time, I was a vegetarian in a world of meat pie eaters. The smell of them used to make me think of the scene in Seven where his senses are assaulted by the smell of rotting human flesh. They still knock me sick
Later, in my clubbing years, I swerved nights out in Wigan unless I really had to. I used to stand in some dive on King Street trying to convince myself that the revellers were actually having a good time. It was like purgatory to me.
I’ve got a scouse twang so 90% of Wiganers disliked me immediately.
I’ve nothing against the place. I spent long enough working there. I just never fitted in.

I can’t disagree with much of what you say there, King Street is horrible, as is the rest of the town centre nightlife. Typical town centre really, shit music and idiots wanting a fight (including the women). I can probably count on one hand the nights out I’ve had in the town centre in 30 years. On a plus point, 30 mins from Manc and Liverpool and an hour from Leeds so it’s not all bad, Fortunately a lot of my time is based in the beautiful Lake District these days so I don’t know much of what’s going on in the land of pies, although i do still have my house there. Ps half the town has a scouse twang!

Not from Wigan but have friends that lived there and always had a soft spot for the place. Bonkers people - must be ‘summut int watter’
