Honoured to be name-checked not only in this thread, but in same parentheses as Mood Hut).
I think because of the rainy, grey summers, as soon as Spring hits, people all become sun-worshippers. It’s also a very coastal type of atmosphere here, very breezy, not too humid! Our relationship with summer music feels like it shares those qualities.
The first tune that came to mind for me was this Carly Simon classic. I feel like I hear this one at every open-air party in Vancouver, and it just never gets old.
Also, the aforementioned Mood Hut crew have really dialled in the feeling of sunny weather here.
I just realized that I’ll be playing with Wolfgang Matthes (aka Liquid Canoe) (A Day In The Life Wolfgang Matthes of Liquid Canoe) on Salt Spring this weekend, and it reminded me of this incredible tune, which is a nice example of “Pacific Northwest Balearic”:
hey thanks for the mention - Hugh Herrera is kinda ground zero for this, along with Sentrall, Tony Watson & Adult Contemporary, lots of folks who come from the underground disco scene / harv worshippers, a handful of folks who came from the old chillout & downtempo scene on the west coast (loose at best). When I was buying for Amoeba SF I had all the first wave nu-balearic stuff like c56/IIB etc, but there’s no scene really.
oh and Eddie Ruscha - Secret Circuit, Scotty Coats, Dirty Dave…
So much truth written in this post…& so strange that for ages i have been thinking of putting a selection of so such tunes together which i actually did last weekend at long last…& now reading this post gor the first time, totally unaware you posted on the same subject!
