100% – this is going on the short list that I’ll use to explain the genre to the DJs I’m booking for my events. Love it.
Too obvious?
Too house?
Ive been looking for somewhere to post this. Maybe too clean in sound to suit the fuzzy vibe but MM is from north california, i think, and i can guarantee this is pop music that sounds good on a pill
Does some of the Gabrielle Roth stuff count? Although not strictly Californian, her whole dance movement and music cemented itself in Esalen.
For sure. Esalen is good DNA for this collection. Thank you, hadn’t thought of that one.
The locals have always had a deal with the Esalen Institute where you can use their hot tubs and sauna for $20 if you go from 1-4am. Since not many people live in Big Sur, and fewer still know about this old accord, very few people take them up on it. I think I read about it in a Henry Miller book or something. Anyway, I did it and it was amazing. You’re in a hot tub (bath) outdoors on top of a cliff and can hear the ocean below. The stars are incredible. Mui Calearic!
One of the DJs at our events (who is a forum member here! not sure if he wants his location/region outed, so I’m not naming him) played Beach Boys’ God Only Knows (Acapella) as the opener for his set … really great tune:
Here’s a set that I thought really nailed the vibe. This was at the event that I host where I booked the DJs and gave them the “Calearic” guidance.
Vinyl only, some real great selections in there that really nailed the assignment!
And here’s another crew of DJs who took on the same assignment (for the same event).
In this set, I think the 2nd DJ (all vinyl) came closest to the vibe target. He’s also the most experienced and has the deepest collection, so perhaps no surprise.
