Best digital recorder for mixes?

Have just bought a Scarlet 2i2 to record vinyl mixes, but am super confused as to how to get the Scarlett connected to my stereo.

Here’s a link to my previous post about this on a different thread

The set up is:
-x2 1210’s
-Vestax PCR-275 mixer
-Tannoy speakers
-Sony Amp
-Sure SM58 mic
-Scarlett 2i2 Soundcard and Macbook pro with Audacity softwear

The scarlett only has two inputs on the front - would these connect to the master output on the back of the mixer? Then I’m not sure where the mic would go, as it has the XLR connecter. Do I need a different soundcard perhaps with more inputs?

I’m not super technical - any help v much appreciated!

Is this what the back of the mixer looks like?

It doesn’t seem to have a Record Out which is what you’d usually use to connect to your Scarlett.

Im guessing you use the second Main Out rca line to the Scarlett. And the XLR Main Out to your amp.

I think the PCR has two sets of ‘Master’ outs no? I have the PMC-270.
Go from those into your 2i2, start with low/zero volume from mixer and increase.
The 2i2 will handle the ‘audio’ via usb into your Mac.

So essentially you go from analogue from mixer to 2i2, then digital from 2i2 to your Mac.

Picture worth a thousand words etc…

My Audio interface is a Behringer but same principal.

(You can’t see USB in that pic so ignore those two leads plugged in back)

You can use the other outs to your Amp.

Are you recording radio show type audio hence the Mic?

Yes, this is the back of the mixer. So do I go 2nd master out from the mixer - into the line output on back of the 2i2?

Good point w the photos!

Yep, exactly!

Out from mixer into front not back. Those connectors are for both XLR and 1/4 inch.

Mic wise you could try using one plugged into one of the mixer channels via your mic line in (top left of mixer) then you would have a slider to mix in your vocal. But your XLR mic won’t work with that.

I think @Gavin and me are saying the same thing.

Are you sorted now?

Edit: looks like you’ll need adapters from rca to those jack plugs for the main out in order to connect with your amp (whilst you are using the rca/second output to connect to your Scarlett).

Yep all sorted on the connection now, thanks both! Altho now the soundcard isn’t being detected when I connect to may Mac! Suspect it needs softwear updates

I’d recommend a portable audio record (Tascam or Zoom) as there is utility in it outside of recording your mixes. Most providers now have 32bit float versions of their budget/mid-tier recorders now, so that’s a massive annoyance removed.

I use this: behringer uca222 and a usb c adapter to plug into my Mac. then audacity to record, you can change the levels in it, it’s free and works well.

+1 for a Tascam. I’ve been using the Tascam DR-05X a few times with no problems. Battery powered so it’s handy if you ever want to record a mix ‘out’ by just plugging it into the mixer, no laptop needed.

Haven’t recorded any mixes for years (used to use a mini disc then record that onto audacity) and was looking at the Tascam. Do you just record directly onto it in WAV or MP3 then transfer it onto your Mac?

Yes, record as a WAV. Just make sure that you check the input volume, as sometimes, unless you have an attenuator, you need to bring the levels right down.

I haven’t recorded for years either but keep meaning to.

The horror of plugging in and “live” recording - then listening back and every kick drum is a squelch.
I hear it in my nightmares!

I swear the bars are within the right zone, but I know I need to be more patient and scientific.
Maybe this summer I will get back on it!

Thanks. Looks like the most flexible and carry handy option.

So it’s the Tascam DR-05X and I’m assuming it’s a phono to stereo jack cable to connect the mixer to the Tascam and then you just need to transfer to the laptop when recorded?

For transferring, you just connect to the laptop with a USB cable, then the Tascam appears as a USB drive on the laptop, and the wavs or mp3s are all there to copy.
