Andrew Weatherall

This is a great post and one I wholeheartedly agree with.

I loved all of the early Boys Own stuff, ALFOS and lots of stuff in between.

But there was lots that just weren’t for me :man_shrugging:

What I did love and admire about Andrew though was the way he went about things, doing things his way, not following formulas or trends.

Or doing it for the money (all of this has been said many times before).

I’ll always remember hearing Big Hard Excellent Fish, Bomba, his remixes of Galliano, the Moody Boyz, Moby & Come Together for the first time and being blown away.

Or my first ALFOS in 2012 and hearing him play Cheaters (a record I just had to own).

But there’s a lot where I’ve just pressed the skip button. Not that it was awful, it just wasnt for me.

Hi Kier

Days late?

That’s a fair point, I mean I’ve presumed the breakbeat section is being passed down to me so I really should be concerned now.

Hello mate , this is all very friendly.

Can we start talking about really obscure records again now?

I knew it

The LP has been pulled. :disappointed:

From Bandcamp

Evening Campers,

A huge heart felt thanks to everyone who supported the W.R.F - Phonox Nights release.
It may come as little surprise that, with timing worthy of The Grinch, Phonox Nights has now been pulled from distribution. I have decided to retreat for a while (for my own sanity!) and this is the easiest option to turn down the noise. I can only remain extremely happy that the world finally got to hear the album and now I shall look forward to new and exciting sonic adventures.
However, there is a T-shirt and very lovely it is too!
Flying the flag for the independent record store domain so beloved by Andrew and in the grand car boot tradition of 127 to Facility 4, Phonox Nights t-shirts will be exclusively available from Vinyl Van Records vinylvan.co.uk in Dorchester. These lustrous Lady Justice beauties can be purchased direct from the lovely Helen and Marcia at their Dorset wax oasis or from here: cside.bigcartel.com once the digital shop has been stocked.

And of course there’s the Cosmic Hutch, Saturday morning 23rd at Tiswas O clock (11.00am). Join myself & Kris Needs with guests for our Christmas fun torpedo of chat, music and mayhem.

Have a peaceful break over the festive period. Kick back, be nice to yourselves and enjoy the music. See you in 2024

Weatherall clearly really liked making things. Having done Screamadelica etc it would have been pretty easy for him to be seized by creative inertia. I really admired how he just kept on rolling as he loved the process. As such, it seems a bit of a shame Phonox Nights got pulled, even if it’s not really my cup of tea.

Nina’s New Year’s Eve mix, not listened to it all yet but flicked through to the 1hr30min point to get a bit of AW recounting his first trip

“ Now a much-anticipated new year’s tradition, Nina Walsh’s fourth annual Sonic Treasures mix might be expected to celebrate hard-won triumphs such as finally releasing Phonox Nights, the final album she recorded with lifelong creative partner Andrew Weatherall, which hung precariously in the ether as 2023 dawned. Now with that mission accomplished, and after this stunningly evocative new mix blasts off with two previously unheard Phonox Nights sizzlers that didn’t fit on the album, Nina unveils All That Bluster, the long-awaited Nina and the Fireflies album that will be her next major release in 2024. Partly comprising her lost soundtrack to Killing Eve, the album’s supernatural psych-folk gumbo emerges as a companion set to Phonox Nights, simultaneously recorded with guitarist Franck Alba at Facility4 and coming with four remixes that were among the last completed by Mr Weatherall before he passed away nearly four years ago. This highly personal odyssey climaxes with three u nreleased gems from the bulging Walsh-Weatherall vault, starting with legendary 20-minute epic ‘The Acid Trip’ built around Andrew’s hilariously vivid account of his first LSD experience, captured at rehearsals in 2016. Once again, Nina has gloriously pulled off highlighting past achievements with both eyes set firmly on the future. Happy new year!”
