At the end of the latest episode of the “Cosmic Hutch” podcast, Kris Needs delivered some cryptic (yet direct) comments about the behaviour of an unamed individual towards Andrew Weatherall’s WRF co founder (and Needs’ friend), Nina Walsh. He said that the truth will out regarding this.
Needs wrote the press release. I think I got sent it. All a bit sad really isn’t it : (
Needs is writing Nina Walsh’s biography I think.
Yes very sad that people very close to him are now seemingly at war with lawyers involved.
Looks like theres potential for it to get nasty and for folk to take sides. Really very sad.
Statement from Nina Walsh……
Andrew Weatherall was a gentleman. He despised bullies, he encouraged and empowered women in what is a filthy misogynistic industry of music and he had complete respect and trust in those he chose to partner with in his creative endeavours.
Most of you reading this will know how close Andrew and I worked together and for how long. He always supported my work, solo or in collaboration and was always there to watch my back.
I met Andrew when I was 17 years old and he remained a solid fixture in my life up until the day he passed in 2020. I can honestly say that Andrew was the most important male figure who ever walked into my life. We were soul mates and I miss him dearly.
From the day Andrew passed, almost 4 years ago, my life has been turned upside down and people who I believed were driven by good intentions have done nothing but try to control me, control our music with promises to “maximise profitability” and “enhance copyright” (does that sound like Andrew?!) and completely disregard any vision that Andrew and I had for our music.
Andrew called me from the hospital not long before he passed to reassure me that he had spoken to ‘management’ who had promised him they would contact me first thing in the morning to make sure that all the outstanding ‘business’ would be taken care of.
To this day ‘management’ have not called and I was left to deal with it alone.
I was excluded from any funeral arrangements, being told “I was not necessary” and I have even been asked in an email by the Weatherall estate how much it would cost for me to go away.
Not long after Andrew’s funeral, slanderous attacks on me claiming that I was a ‘crack head’ began to circulate. These were filtering back to both me and my clients and I found myself in the bizarre position of having to explain that I had never taken crack in my life and never would do. I have signed statements from people confirming that they had been informed of this by the Weatherall estate first hand. I also have emails that confirm this from the main perpetrator. Various clients of mine were contacted by the Weatherall estate demanding to see private contracts that had been agreed between myself and the client only. Even my studio that I have built up over the last 25 years was under threat as the estate claimed the equipment was provided by Andrew.
Andrew would literally rock up with his satchel, a bag of Greggs sausage rolls and a book.
It has now been almost 4 long years of persistent intimidation, threats and harassment.
This continuing onslaught will be detailed in my biography, instigated and being written by Kris Needs.
There are even attempts to silence this book and our YouTube podcast, Into The Cosmic Hutch in return for ‘permitting’ our record to be released.
Knowing that Phonox Nights has now been delivered and in the hands of those who have been waiting so long to hear it makes me feel proud and relieved. Yesterday I was overwhelmed by the amount of beautiful messages of love, gratitude and support, on what should have been a joyous day of celebration. Against the odds, I have accomplished our final mission the way we had both envisaged and it will hopefully allow me to move forward with my grief, which has been blocked by having to defend myself against the persistent attacks.
However, the estate will not stop here and no doubt will try everything to recall this release and remove it from all digital platforms. I could actually request the same for all the previously released W.R.F music that has been exploited by Cacophony Ltd without any signed agreement in place but all that would do is limit the ability for people to hear our music even further.
If this is “managing Andrew’s extensive archive” it is obviously a horrendous waste of money and if their only suggestion for some kind of resolution is for me to remove Andrew’s name from the hundreds of unreleased W.R.F compositions and “regulate my use of Andrew’s name in general” then there is no other word than tragic.
Anyone else a bit confused as to what is actually going on here
Listened to the album a couple of times today, and I’m quite enjoying it. Certainly sounds to me like something Andrew would have released.
Who knows the truth about it all. It seems very sad as Andrew and Nina spent half a lifetime making and releasing music together and I never read her express anything other than Love for him
It’s just OK for me. Great production, all the sounds are right but something missing. Dare I say it a little boring?
A game of 2 halves, second half better than the first.
I have Convenanza gathering dust on a shelf because that one never grabbed me. But I learnt a long time ago with Weatherall never to get rid of them. Just because it doesn’t grab you today doesn’t mean you won’t get it tomorrow.
2LS mixes of Stuka are a case in point, sat on the shelf for about ten years that one. Gave it a listen before possibly giving it to a mate and now it’s a firm fave.
Agree with some of the comments above about it not being a great album and that some of Andrew’s stuff does get better with age and time.
I still bought it though, mainly because - according to Nina’s comments - it may get deleted.
Hello all New here first post and all that! Is the Woodleigh Research Facility Phonox Nights LP going to get pulled now ? Ive noticed its vanished from a few online websites last night. No pre-order anywhere either now unless someone has one.
Also did anyone else get the new issue of Electronic Sound Magazine too with the WRF ltd white vinyl 7" The Weatherall write up is top draw.
Welcome Andrew! Not sure on the album. I got it sent from K7 a few weeks back and haven’t had any further news this side…
Really sad story, but in cases like this i do tend to lean towards the “two sides to every story” way of looking at things. Heard a lot from Kris Needs and Nina Walsh, but little from the Weatherall estate.
Can’t understand what their reasons would be for this “alleged” behavior, apart from money of course…
One thing i am certain of is that it will probably end up in court, and lawyers will end up with the biggest payday from this.
That’s going to feed all the Discogs sharks for sure already seen two sellers on eBay over the weekend offering it up for silly money
I just hope everything works out for all!
Bakerboy! How’s things?
Im very well Chris was going to DM you regarding a little venture. Spoke to Lofty about it last week!
Seems to be a few places taking pre-orders: Woodleigh Research Facility / Andrew Weatherall / Nina - Phonox Nights on Moin Vinyl
Listened to it again this morning and I’d agree with that, ‘dull’ is the word that springs to mind.
I’ll revisit it at some time in the future and see how I feel then.
