How could I have forgotten this? One of my favourite pieces of music of all time. Much like Baltimore, it’s completely transcended the original.
Not sure it’s my number 1 but it’s up there

So hard, but this would be near the top
(although I’ve just remembered saying that I wanted State of Independence played at my funeral, so maybe it’s that one )
Glad you posted this so I didn’t have to.

Related to that Donny Hathaway record, in a way.
Such a genius for taking 3-minute pop songs and making them just epic.
I won’t post it in this august company but Wu-tang’s ‘I can’t go to sleep’ draws on its majesty
Bloody difficult to choose but I’m going for this. Just because every time I hear it I say how bloody good it is.
Maybe it doesn’t quite obliterate the OG but still up there for me…
Donna Summer - State of independence
801 - tomorrow never knows
OR
Chicago - I’m a man
I guess DS edges it
*Not my fave but arguably the most inventive cover i ever heard was Schneider TM’s discordant ‘The Light 3000’ take on The Smiths
Thats not one! : )
I read that in Bill Brewster’s voice.
i thought about the schneider TM cover of “the light” - a very laptoppy take on it for sure. that was a fun era, but i don’t know that i’ve yet come around to it again. might need a little more time.
Borrows a small instrumental part from Glen Campbells “Witchita linesmen” weirdly. Both epic tunes
Only just discovered that this is a cover of sorts today. Even though it’s in my top 10 of favourite pieces of music ever made
So this is my final and definitive choice.
