The level of care old DJs had is impressive. I love it when they’re all stickers like the example above. Any of you found anything?
I’ve told my Timmy Regisford story here somewhere. Tom Noble had a few of his records for sale at Superior Elevation around 2018 and lots of them had markings in his handwriting. I bought his old copy of Kerri Chandler’s Atmosphere EP and next to the classic track on that there is a line and the word BAD written in capital letters. The good kind of bad.
By the way, the hype stickers on these Hot Tracks and other similar series almost always listed BPM’s for each song. Just their way of making DJ’s lives easier. On many of them the info is on the label as well.
These weren’t hype stickers. This was the DJs own way of organizing. Only did it for the tracks he played.
Yep, I am actually jealous he printed them out so pretty, mine are all horribly done by hand. I just mentioned that because I had to toss a Hot Tracks cover that was the victim (along with several other things like my Allen & Heath mixer) to a minor rain disaster at the tail end of 2024. I was sad because the info there was useful but it was beyond saving.
I started a thread on a similar topic a way back (but not as good)
Talk us through the picture flexis
I don’t own it anymore but Peaking Lights had a handwritten pizza recipe in copies of 936 which was quite sweet and psychedelic.
way back when, hot tracks sent out those lil’ stickers on most (all?) of their issues. i might even have some un-stuck stickers around here somewhere.
here’s an example of what you would have got way back in 89: https://www.discogs.com/master/2997227-Various-Hot-Tracks-Series-8-Issue-1
That makes much more sense. Thanks for the knowledge
I stand corrected. Spent the day trying to find more in copies at a store out here that has loads but none had the hype stickers left. Quite cool foresight fro the company that done DJs would play only certain tracks and this would make it easier to find for them on the compilation. Tempted to do my own version as my eyesight isn’t exactly conducive to tiny white type on a pink background (last night a DJ saved my life comp) as I had trouble seeing a few weeks ago.
…and the Wham doodles - what do they mean? Are they related to the record or was someone just using a random 7" as a notepad?
I think its something to do with chart position?
I plan to go back and investigate. there were soooo many interesting looking things, we ended up limiting ourselves to 1 record perhour. otherwise nothing would have gotten done
