Keep meaning to get to this. Heard nothing but good things.
Luke Una & the Soul Buggin crew (espec @Beane_Noodler ) were very good at daytime in Nottingham yesterday
Loads of music that I thought I should know but didnt
Home by 10pm & I cooked myself a burger ( went for a kebab but place seemed too nasty)
I had my own mini festival of gigs over the weekend. Thursday night was Primal Scream at Hammersmith Apollo. They opened with Don’t Fight It Feel It which was a good start, then a very enjoyable set which mixed some of the better songs off the recent album with older Screamadelica and Vanishing Point stuff. They’re good at what they do. Fun spotting the many eras of Bobby Gillespie lookalikes in the crowd!
Friday night will take some beating as the gig of the year - Orphy Robinson’s heartfelt tribute to Roy Ayers at the Church of Sound. An amazingly talented group of musicians, running through one of the best back catalogues in an incredible venue. All the main classics, a few deeper cuts plus some of Roy’s productions including Eighties Ladies and Sylvia Striplin. Some vids posted by a mate here: Andy Crowther on Instagram: "What a night at @church_of_sound last night… the band were on fire. Thank you @orphyvibes, @smauricegrey, @donovan_jazz_sax, @xanblacq, @dennisrollinsfunkytrombone, @marypearcesinger and @lex_blondin 🙏 #royayers" I really recommend checking out future Church of Sound stuff, top quality. Then last night was Kamasi Washington at Brixton Academy. A bit of an odd one this I thought. After loving the up-close vibe on Friday, jazz in a big venue on a bit of a muddy system - even with the power of Kamasi - didn’t quite work for me. I enjoyed the gig but it felt like he was trying different things to take his music into bigger arenas, like adding a DJ and a vocalist to the band, but the former felt unnecessary and the latter not really good enough to make it fully work. Maybe you just need more tunes with hooks to get a larger crowd going - as Ezra Collective do really well. His secret gig at the Standard Hotel the night before looks like it was the one! https://youtu.be/brFnBZMn-i4?si=z0huUF1ut0mngKXD
After some forgetting-to-buy-myself-a-ticket-waitlist drama, Payfone at Alphabet on Friday
Anyone want two tickets for Piers & Brian Not Brian at Giant Steps in Hackney this Sunday 20th April?
Unfortunately I can no longer make it. Sorry Piers!
I’ve put the tickets on RA resale but if anyone on here wants them you can have them for free. Let me know asap or they might re-sell.
It’s bound to be an excellent afternoon/evening of music. Gutted to miss it.
