Using a modified 1930s Presto record lathe and a high quality mono Grampian cutterhead a generic backbeat is cut over the top of an existing commercial vinyl record. You are listening to the result of the playback from the tonearm with some additional editing to highlight some interesting behaviours of this overwriting activity. The playback offers a âpalimpsestuousâ response as the needle performs the new beat plus some of the original elements. The response is seemingly chaotic; at times the original material is replaced entirely, sometimes interrupted, and sometimes intersected. Effectively a new relationship is formed between the overlaid part and the existing grooves in ways which do not happen in other recording or overwriting approaches. Other than processing and reverb, no additional elements have been added
Just someone awkwardly filming them with a massive video camera
Although he looks like an insurance salesman from an Ealing comedy now
The band I was in supported him many years ago in Nottingham (2006 actually) . He was lovely, if a little lost.
He took a shine to my Rickenbacker and wanted to buy it. I was seeing $$$ signs so I said yeah, so he wandered off to go and ask his manager. Half an hour later weâre nearing our stage time and he still wasnât back. Rest of my band were in hysterics, saying heâs probably selling it for crack as we speak!
Eventually he comes back and with these really sad (massively dilated) eyes he says 'Aw my manager said I canât have it"
They treated us right all night which is always a good sign.
Garnier doing one of my alltimers Acid Eiffel live a few years back. Never seen this before. Facemeltingly good
Used to love all the videos Laurent did for his tracks - Flashback, Crispy Bacon, etc
I remember when he did Lost with Mills and played Age of Love. Some of the purists fucked off but I thought it was amazing
Heâs one of the best DJâs imho. Saw him play for 8 hours at Final Frontier once and it was brilliant. I still have the occassional play of this RA mix. Proper funky techno.
Agree 100% his first gig in Ireland was at Sir Henrys in Cork June 1993 and it was mind blowing. It was recorded and the two tapes 90 min and 60 min are out there but really bad qualityâŚ
In the top ten DJs Iâve ever heard, definitely.
Helped me âpop my cherryâ so to speak. Just after the Labratoire mix came out, canât remember the name of the night now but â97 at Cream that bigger back roomâŚstill get shivers.
Love that track and album!
It was mad for the time, but musically at least you could do it on a phone now.
