Took a break from the twin hell of packing and jobhunting last night, and watched this. An ambitious attempt to cross London (North to South) by foot in one day without going down a single road or canal. Was a bit suspicious at times about how much might’ve been staged or pre-arranged, but does seem legit. The SAS should sign him up.

I enjoyed both parts too. I’ve watched quite a few straightlines and two Ā£10 in my pocket episodes, great guy.

He’s done some great geo detective vids, where someone sends an old pic of a dead relative(on holiday for example) and he finds the exact spot.

Often find those types of ā€œwow look what happened when Iā€¦ā€ vids a bit clickbaity but this one really hooked me in. London is surely the only city on earth where you say ā€˜morning’ to strangers and they look at you (or each other…) like you escaped from Broadmoor.

Also, you forget how vast it is. In all those years I covered maybe 20% tops. You could parachute me into Penge, Dagenham, Mayfair, Harlington… and I’d be totally lost

The guys on fire!

One underexamined media phenomenon that could be driving xenophobia worldwide is the sensationalist youtuber on urban safari. This is focused on Japan but could as easily apply where I live. He makes a lot of good points, especially about cynically distorted footage which gives viewers a false idea.

Sensationalist bullshit > Authenticity and integrity.

Fucking depressing isn’t it?

Most of the blame, imo, is down to how these fringe characters have been given the space to make ground. Keep defending the status quo that hasn’t worked, with peoples income, services and quality (and potential length) has created the space for them to work. Or, to be more precise, those that pushed the Neoliberal/Neoclassical project from the early '70’s onwards. The Liz Truss debacle was funny in that she is a buffoon, but it was a warning to all that Markets have undemocratic power that leaves politicians now have very little power to make any serious economic moves. Immigration has been a no go area of discussion for decades. It certainly is now and been driven by a cabal of twats.

Calling everyone who voted for Brexit or Trump are not all racists. It’s a comforting fantasy told by people who don’t/can’t understand what has, and is happening (or why). Democracy has been given over to a group of people have the power to bring governments down, undermine democracy - ironically the same people that spend millions lobbying governments to not crack down on immigration. Freedom of people and capital has left most options available to any governments, impossible.

This guy, Chris Broad has with his Abroad In Japan one of the best youtube channels about Japan. Been following him for years now.

His book of the same title, covering the period when he first arrived in Japan as an English teacher on the JET program, is an entertaining read

I’ve stayed in one of the places in Coober Pedy, absolutely amazing.

It was about 42 degrees outside. As we descended the steps of the hotel/hostel, the temperature dropped in half instantly.
