It didnt have any of the Directorial flare you would usually get from a Fincher movie. I like Fassbender as well but I found his character a sort of Jason Bourne lite, one note cardboard cut out. Lots of it didnt really make sense, and Tilda Swinton was wasted.
I’m finding lots of straight to Netflix films from the big Directors with a starry cast are really not good enough. See also The Grey Man, Extraction and Knives Out 2. There must something in that

I heard Loki was good, watched episode 1 & didn’t understand a word of it. Have always thought it was visually great though, from Owen Wilson’s moustache onward.

Yeah, the aesthetics are really great. There’s a lot of nonsensical timey winey stuff and like all Marvel content a fair bit of homework to do if your not aware of the wider story, but you can just let it all wash over you and go along for the ride.

Finding “Fellow Travellers”, a dramatisation of the gay male experience in the US in response to federal government’s policies and actions, compelling. And also finding “The Curse” very interesting, if not comfortable, viewing.

It’s a bit Tabloid TV but this BBC doc about nitrous use in Brum was an eye-opener - don’t see those little silver capsules around so much now

Saw Killers of the Flower Moon. Great stuff and doesn’t really lag at the 3+ hour running time. Will seek out the book.

Finally made it through to the end of House of Usher. I have to admit, I do struggle with Mike Flanagan. They are reasonably entertaining, but to me, there’s always something missing - maybe theyre just not scary enough? I found The Haunting of Hill House laughably bad and had to stop watching. Bly Manor was slightly better, although again, I found some of the acting really wooden and had to force myself to get to the end. Midnight Mass was better and Usher marked a significant improvement. So at least he’s on an upward trajectory. I just wish some of the casting was better and why does he keep using the same actors - stop using the kid out of ET, because he’s so wooden my fence is getting jealous.
Mark Hamil was brilliant though

I didn’t even realise it was Mark Hamil until I was looking at the cast list. Agree it is his best so far, still silly in places but this suited the hammy feel. Spotting all the Poe references was fun too.
